Would you let him out? Bernie Madoff says he's dying and wants out of prison.

I have to say I would allow him out. I know he stole all that money but over 12 billion dollars have been recovered and returned to the victims now... his own kids have died because of the stress of his crimes, horrible punishment for any parent , and the man has now had a heart attack, and is stage 4 kidney failure.. . He's 81 into his 11th year of a prison sentence.. it was horrendous what he did, but he was not only punished with that very long sentence for his crime but made an example of and deterrent for others ..and rightly so...but when does an eye for an eye make us blind?

Worse criminals serve much shorter sentences...

I may think very differently if I'd been affected by his crime, and it is hard to imagine a less sympathetic non-violent offender than Bernard Madoff but he's been given an undisputed terminal death sentence now of a max life span of 18 months, he's in terminal pain wears a back brace and is confined to a wheel chair, why should you the tax payer continue to pay for his incarceration and his medical bills , why not just allow him out under house arrest for his last year of life, and he can pay his own medical bills, and live his last few but very painful months at home...?
You're right about one thing. We shouldn't be paying for his medical bills. Especially when we could spend $1.50 & save a fortune. And he won't be in pain any longer:

I am anti-prison for all but the most uncontrollably violent offenders. Prison, in most cases, doesn't work. If anything, offenders come out worse than before, and full of new info on how to commit more crimes, and avoid the law, more effectively.

I regularly worked with former prisoners, in one of my professions. I could tell many tales.

I've read books on Madoff. While he is a terrible person, his major crime was assisted by the unbridled greed of his victims, as in many cases like his. That doesn't excuse his actions, though.

If he's let out, we'll still be paying for his medical treatments, I have a feeling, but, sure, let him die somewhere other than the prison hospital.

Make sure he stays far away from any computers, though, and is forbidden to visit any stock brokers!

A halfway house might work, or a hospice. No way I'd let him out into a totally unsupervised lifestyle.

I interject this only as food for thought; there are plenty of people who've ran health scams. It appears that he's got the resources to hire a high dollar lawyer from prison, why wouldn't he have the money to get the test results he wants? I also find it odd that he refuses dialysis.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for his victims . Greed is the only thing that took their money. If I recall correctly the outrageous interest return rates he promised ? If that wasn't a red flag?...Don't feel sorry for them at all.

Again, tugging on my memory here, but most of them were fairly well off in the first place.....they just wanted more, and jumped at his deal.
I can't argue with that

Reminds me of The Flim-Flam Man, with George C Scott
Many a lesson in that old movie

As far as where Madoff needs to be?
Heh, wherever he goes, he can't get away from himself

No, I would not let him out. Though some investors may have recouped their losses, many lives were destroyed due to this person. And I doubt that all of them were driven by greed; some were invested through financial "advisors" and had no idea they were being ruined. Why rush to judge the victims of any crime??
I definitely agree that not all of his victims were motivated by greed, since there were some whose money was directed into Madoff's massive Ponzi Scheme, through legitimate funds, without really knowing that was happening. However, in the two books I read, most of the early investors were, in fact, motivated by their desire to make the (pretty clearly) impossible yearly returns on their money that Madoff promised. Even before the house of cards end, there were a few financial analysts who alerted the SEC, and others, that Madoff was a fraud, but their warnings went unheeded.

He does?I.m thinking he does want to hasten his death.

I read awhile back that he and his wife tried to overdose before his conviction, but woke up side by side. I don't know if that's true or not; forgot where I saw it.
Some people who consider themselves clever because of their ability to rip people off & they also enjoy it, lose the will to live when they can't do it any more. Getting away with it is a big part of their lives.

hollydolly.....Have you ever looked back at some of your post n realize how smart n logical you are? When some of us are angry with what he has done your logic comes thru. Thanks!
@Lvstotrvl, had you not written this on the Bernie Madoff thread I would have jumped on your wagon and seconded the motion, and sang
Holly's praises. It didn't seem right for me to do so on this thread. I think I like it because you did,

My compassionate nature says he should be buried in the prison yard. Unless you want to get on the subject of mercy. 🤔
