Manual or Auto boxes?

I know most of you guys have auto boxes in your cars and most of us on this side of the pond have manual (stick shift).....I wonder why that is? we have two driving tests here, if you pass on an automatic box, you can only drive automatics.....yet if you pass on a manual box you are okay to drive manual and auto boxes?. Having driven both I prefer the manual, but yearn for the auto when stuck in traffic lol!!

Give me manual any day. I want to be in charge of the car and I want the car to do what I want - when I want it.
I've only driven automatics in the States.

We always had manual transmission cars and truck for most of our lives. We currently have a Dodge diesel pick-up truck and a Jeep Cherokee that is manual. I agree driving a manual in stop-and-go traffic is a hassle. However there are some pluses, easier to rock it when stuck in deep snow, or you can pop the clutch when the car dies to get it to start again. It's good when the camper is in the truck on mountain roads, much more control when off-roading on dirt roads also. :drive: Our newest car is a 2007 Dodge Nitro, which is our first automatic, but we don't drive it very often so far.

I can drive either, when I landed at Shannon airport I completely forgotten the wheel is on the right side and all the manual shifting was on my left.

Took about 2 hours to master this new driving style.
Irish drivers were not happy seeing someone coming at them on the wrong side of the road.:)

I was gonna drive it from CA to back here. it was a gas hog. at this time the 409 was very popular with boat racer's out there. so i was gonna sell it drop in a smaller engine for the trip. a pal of mine rolled it on the base and totaled it out. to his credit he paid off my loan

We could get our lis. at 14 in my home state. I had driven an old flat bed, 4 on the floor, start button next to the gas feed pickup on my father's const sites since 11 YO. I went to take the test and the examiner got in and told me to drive to corner then right, next corner - right, next corner - right, next corner - right, park signed off on my application. I said is that all? He said, 'Son if you can drive this, you can drive anything.' I had passed.

Why do the USA and others, like most of europe, drive on the wrong side.......???
