What's Good Or Bad About Where You Live?

We walk 20' from our front door to the car, then we drive to the store or to see the medicine man, etc. I never liked big cities. A small town adjacent to a bigger city works better. One place we lived was on a barrier island across the causeway fro St Petersburg, we really liked that town.
 

What's good about living here, most people are very careful about coming in here. Almost never in late fall, early spring.
What's bad? Most of the summers they wander in and get lost, jump into water that was ice less that a week ago.. Ok , that last one I truly adore, amazing how some vocal cords get to such a high pitch.

For the 10 1/2 years we lived in northeastern Florida, aka Jacksonville, we encountered numerous Palmetto bugs of which are the same as cockroaches. Especially after a rain, those bugs came out in force! Exterminator would come, spray and within a few days, they'd be back. One lady said "I'm paying this much for my apartment and have these things in it!" Our apartment manager told us, "just a part of living in Florida, just like tropical storms and hurricanes are." She was right on all three!

But, we found out very quickly, not all Seniors in the U.S. move to Florida, Phoenix, Las Vegas or So. California for retirement. Many live here in Colorado, like us. Winters don't bother them at all. Heck, I've still got high school classmates that still live in Indiana.
 
Living in a rural area has it's pluses...clean air, clean water, little or no crime, etc. On the minus side, perhaps the inconvenience of having to go several miles for shopping for other than the essentials, and being some distance from total medical care, might be the biggest minuses. So far, the pluses outweigh the minuses...IMO.

Wow, what a news flash. You'll be stunned to hear that seniors live everywhere that other people live! Who'd have thought?? :cautious:
 
Good: Good weather eight months of the year.
Bad: The other four months. But it's OK, we escape to the mountains for those months.

Good: Both the Atlantic coast and the Gulf coast are easily accessible. Some people only get to experience the beaches a few times in their lives. I can go every day if I want. The Panhandle beaches are spectacular and we have a family house up there. The St. John's river is a 10-minute drive from my house and the many springs are gorgeous for swimming.
Bad: I got a new black swimsuit and my legs are pasty-white and I'm pudgy; everyone keeps calling SeaWorld to report that Shamu has escaped.

Good: Lots to do here, all the way from enjoying nature to screaming your head off on a rollercoaster at one of the theme parks.
Bad: Disney has hit over $100 per day admission. Damn. $100???? AND, it costs $23 to park and a bottle of water is about $4.

Good: Because there's so much to do, people like to come visit you so you get to see your relatives a lot.

Good: Real estate is more reasonable than a lot of other places.
Bad: Wages aren't anything to brag about.
Good #2: I'm retired, I don't care.

Good: Diversity. Lots of it. The world comes to Orlando.
Bad: Can't think of anything bad about diversity.

Good: People here tend to be friendly.
Bad: Nothing bad about that, either.
 
Austin, TX.

Good:

Consistently rated as one of the best cities in the world for starting and running a business. Only it and S.F. made the cut, last month, for the US.

Great shopping, dining, entertainment.

Great nearby lakes and rivers. Great scenery.

Very diverse population.

Bad:

Its great reputation is destroying it: Thousands move here every month.

Homeless problem is one of the worst in the country.

Mayor loves the homeless more than the working folks. The governor dislikes the mayor.

Traffic is horrendous, must be seen to be believed, and that's coming from a former Chicago cab driver. 14th worst traffic, in the world.

Housing is expensive. Taxes will make you dizzy.

Air and water are getting bad.

Only two seasons: Is it hot or cold today season and Hell season.

Crime keeps getting worse.

Janet and I are heading for the High Country of Colorado. Hopefully we'll find a place by this time, next year.

(I moved here in 1978. I thought I had found Paradise. It had a population of around 300,000. Everything was amazing, laid back, clean. Now, the population is around 2,000,000!)

I like living in the apt. community in which I reside. There are a couple of grocery stores nearby if I choose to walk to them. I usually shop online, though, now since I have no car. There are lots of activities in this city even though I haven't partook in them, it's good to know they exist.

I am right on the border of my city and a major one and there are things going on in the major city that I can do.

There are good city services here like snow removal and trash pick up. The roads are almost always clear in snowy weather.

There is a fireworks display in one of the city parks every July 4.

The police are on their toes. My city was once commended for being the safest city in the country. It's still very safe even though I haven't seen any awards on it as of late.

Re: my previous post about the website I mentioned- when I answered all the questions about personal preferences, etc., it said Austin TX was the #1 ideal place for me! Never been there, so I wouldn't know.

Beautiful rural areas
Entertainment
Semi close proximity to Boston
Close proximity to New York City
Rare occurrence of hurricane or tornado

The Bad
Heat waves in summer, but not prolonged
Snowstorms in winter
Some cities have blighted areas
High taxes


The Ugly
Abandoned factories and mills allowed to deteriorate in some cities
Crooked Politicians

The good
I Live in a very rural setting.
like sitting out on the deck in the night and just watching stars.
like being able to pee in the woods and no one about.
like being on top of the hill with a clear field of fire.
like watching the baby deer run and play in the field behind my house.
like hearing the coyotes yipping on a full moon night.
like drinking fresh spring water right out of the ground.
like the feel of a wood stove on a chilly night.
like that there are no interstates or 4 lanes near me.
like that I have like minded neighbors close (but not too close) by.
Don't mind having to travel a bit for shopping. (online is helping that a bunch).

The bad..........
not a friend of tornado's.
hate ticks and chiggers.

Oops! Typo. I meant to say $200. When my cousin wanted us all to go to Disney two days before Christmas and then couldn't get us in on her Cast Member pass, we would have had to pay that for a day of incredible stress. I dug my feet in, even though she offered to pay for everyone. Nope, nope, nope. We went to Disney Springs instead and told my aunt it was Disney. She never caught on.....

In no way directed at the OP or anyone who answered already. I was getting ready to write a long post about the good and bad about living in different areas of the USA throughout the year, but then thought most people only read the first few sentences.
 
We have a home in NJ....We New Jersey "in's call it '"Down The Shore"....We live there 43 years.....

Sorry I have a story....My husband was diagnosed with Cancer....A couple of years ago....
We had to sell the condo in another State, we didn't know what the diagnoses would be....

God spared him and he is doing well....Last year he decided we should take a plane and look for a place
where we were a couple of years ago....So we got on a plane and talked to the Real Estate Lady....
So we did it!!!! We bought a cottage....Hey, you never know, what will be....So we took a chance, it's working out well...

If it was up to my husband he would sell the "Down the Shore home"....I'm not ready....

Thank's for reading my story....(I do love this Forum)….I thank my friend here for finding this place.....
