Disturbing Teen Trend-Cough on Produce. Police Investigating.

There will always be dirtbags in the human species. Remember that guy who licked the top of the half-gallon ice cream containers & replaced the lids?
I think there have always been people who do things like this, but the presence of cameras makes it appear like an increasing trend.

Rotten kids.
Yes, they are rotten. I saw a video that really taught me about the mental issues of people who do things like this. It's not as simple as it seems.
There was a security video of an arsonist who started a fire in a building. While he was watching the building burning, he was actually expressing extreme pleasure - heavy breathing, the whole bit, like he was having the best sex of his life. A psychologist explained that arsonists actually are sexually excited when they watch fire. Like pedophiles, they really can't stop doing it.
People who contaminate food probably get similar enjoyment from hurting others anonymously.

I wonder what makes people do such disgusting things! We didn't do things like this when we were young. The only fresh produce I buy are onions and sometimes bananas, each of which I wash thoroughly before using/eating. I've always been aware that produce could be unclean for a variety of reasons because there are a lot of nasty a*s people in the world.

@Lee what about the ice cream? Can't wash that.
Ice cream is my favorite food Marci. I've found that I have to buy the novelties, as they are called, because they last longer than the used to be half a gallon (now 48 oz). The novelties are in sealed packages. Lately I've also been buying the Friendly's mini sundaes. They are packaged with the plastic top that has a plastic seal that must be broken to get to the product. I had hoped that the ice cream companies would get on the ball as far as making their packaging more tamper proof. I haven't seen that yet with the 14 or 48 ounce sizes.

I would only buy ice cream with the ring that you break, most products here feature this safety guard.
The supermarket closest to me sells Friendly's and Turkey hill 48 oz sizes and Haagen Daz, Ben & Jerry's and some other brand I can't remember in the 14 oz sizes. Which brands have you seen with the safety ring?

Just curious - is this a problem in any country other than the U.S? Is this a homegrown phenomena?

I cannot imagine anyone, teens or otherwise, doing such a thing in any country where eatable food is not always readily available.

The difference is, when we were young, the mentally ill were housed in facilities or treated. Now, we don't want to spend the money, so they're wandering the streets everywhere.

When these people are caught the penalty is not harsh enough. When they have to suffer, that may change their minds. And if they are caught taking videos with their cell phone confiscate their cell phone.
