COVID-19 Too Close To Home & N.J. Quarantine?

My Honorary Daughter (HD), mother of two of my grandchildren, was possibly exposed to the virus at the school where she works and is now self quarantining. So far she is asymptomatic. Two of my son's nieces work at hospitals in the county where the virus first hit in N.J. Tonight I found out that someone who attended the same funeral my son and I went to a couple of weeks ago has the virus. Since there was only one reported case in N.J. at the time, we gave hugs and sometimes shook hands at the wake.
Because New York City and the north eastern part of are so interconnected....lots of travel back and forth between the locations on public transportation (which my oldest grandson must take), our governor expects our cases to mirror NYC's meteoric rise. On March 4th there was 1 case in N.J. Today, we have more than 11,000 confirmed cases. The tri-state area (N.J., N.Y. and Conn.) was being considered for official quarantining but instead a "strong travel advisory" will be issued by the CDC.

I don't agree with some of the things these states are doing but I do agree that testing for now should only on those showing symptoms. To me it would be just as important to show the percentage of those sick that are stricken with this. Also that article was one of the few to mention the negative test results at about 66% which is important because not all people getting sick now are getting the same thing.

I heard the samething about quarantining much of the north east but legally I don't think it could be done. At least for now. It would probably take somekind of national martial law and we're not there yet.

Hope everyone stays well.

I'm willing to temporarily sacrifice a few of my rights if it helps to keep us all safe.

The number of confirmed cases in my area continue to rise as more testing is being done.

I think the spread of the virus is much higher than we realize or care to admit.

I agree, especially since our testing is so spotty. Here, you can only get tested if you have symptoms and it's a huge hassle, which means that many people with few or less severe symptoms are not being tested and there are probably a much greater number of folks walking around with it than we will ever know. And people who have no symptoms at all can spread it around.

You're absolutely right Aunt Bea and Butterfly. Aunt Bea...how many confirmed cases in your area? Another problem is that testing sites run out of tests before even getting started good. A new drive through testing site was opened in Paramus (the now infamous Bergen County) and 30 minutes into testing, they had to turn cars away. The asymptomatic who can still spread the virus is what makes COVID-19 so dangerous.

I was in favor of Trump's idea to quarantine NY, NJ, and parts of CT. I think his instincts were right on this one but he seems to have succumbed to political pressure. Or maybe it isn't even legal/possible. Trump's been known to say things impulsively before checking to see if what he says is even possible.
It's understandable that New Yorkers with the means would want to get out of NY but with the asymptomatic carriers ,they shouldn't be allowed to, imo. Watch for Florida to have an explosion of cases soon as that's where many of these NYers are headed.
We have a ton of cases here in Mi and I'm OK if they banned us from leaving the state. I'll just hunker down and try to stay safe.

I expected the quarantine to happen and if it did (does) I'd be okay with it. My BFF lives in Florida and she told me the other day she was surprised when her realtor friend told her there had been no cancellations for condo rentals (usually one - several months) in the wake of the pandemic. I absolutely agree that people from our tri-state area shouldn't be traveling anywhere right now.

In my city, the population is approx. 145,000 and we have 146 confirmed cases with one death reported.

The number is meaningless because the testing has been limited to people reporting some form of respiratory illness.

In order to get a more meaningful number they really should do a random test of several thousand across the entire population of the city.

Even that testing would be imperfect because we have so many people coming into the city from suburban communities.

One of my nieces called me today. She's now self quarantining because her tenants downstairs have the virus!
