I do not remember......

A friend & I were discussing how things work. He had quite a bit of knowledge about mechanical things - cars, electronics, etc.
I told him I knew nothing about electronics; I didn't even understand how the light goes on when you move the switch.
He was very determined to teach me. He went into detail about "completing a circuit, wiring, connections, filaments in the bulb, etc."
After 10 minutes of explaining, I asked, "So, how does the light go on?"
 
I've pretty much forgotten how to use BSL (British sign language ) of which I was fluent... I was raised ''signing'' learned to sign before I could talk, many of my paternal family members were profoundly deaf.. and mute for the most part.. .

Now , I haven't used it since the last of my deaf relatives have passed, I'm very rusty. Sure I can still sign the basics.. but very slowly.. any deaf person now would die of boredom waiting for me to finish a sentence.. :D

I believe this! After a hard-drive crash, the restoration pulled up 30 years of back-ups - I have been a 3d hobbyist for all that time and was shocked to see things that I created eons ago and didn't recall until they showed up again - and, I was upset that I couldn't remember how I created them. /-;

Knitting would be one. Driving a car that isn't automatic. A few cooking instructions. Do
I put the fish in the pan skin side up or skin side down? Does the flour get sifted directly into the cup or sifted and then measured.
Just recently I started to embroider again. As a kid I knew quite a few stitches my mom taught me. I could only recall a couple.
I did find that after researching the forgotten stitches the technique came back to me very quickly. A lot faster than when I first learned them.
 
I wish I can remember, sometimes....
I was on the phone with my very best friend/cousin....She asked me a question...which I couldn't remember....
She said don't you remember you were on the stage in 8th grade with your arm in the cast....You fell and broke your arm..
But the Teacher let you still go on the stage to dance with your partner....(Well she brought back a memory)…
That fall I had, I was roller skating …..I try to forget that....

I do remember when my Mom came home from the Hospital with my new born brother....I was so excited...I was six years old.
I wanted to go in the room to see my little baby brother, I wasn't aloud...My Aunt told me I had germs from outside...
I cried....I'll never forget that moment in my life....

After reading you post, I glanced at my book shelf and noticed my old CRC Standard Mathematical Tables from 1973 which contains all of those Calculus Equations from long ago. There are very few things that are less useful to a retiree than a Calculus Book. This thing is headed to the trash in about 15 minutes. It does show signs of having lived a tough life with all the dog eared pages and bookmark.

….. but wait, I am not 80 yet and I might need it tomorrow to answer some profound question from one of the neighborhood students. FAT CHANCE.

I still have my father's "Mathematical Tables ..." Seventh Edition 1941. Dad was an engineer. He must have used it in his work since he graduated college a decade prior to its publication. I used it in college in the '60s.

He went on and on, on what we did not know, or if we knew, we forgot or did not deem it important.
