Chinese city bans eating dogs and cats in response to coronavirus.

A friend/ex-neighbor adopted her daughter from China....the process required her to spend quite a bit of time there. She explained to me some of their true eating habits, and some of their food "festivals".

Thinking back to her stories of being there.......none of this virus business surprises me.

I agree with toffee! They aren't the only culture that eats dogs, cats, monkeys, argh - disgusting.
Many of us treat our animals like children, I’m sure other cultures find this disgusting. But, if all you had to eat was Fido or Kitty; would you eat them or starve? I watched a video years ago on the native culture in Australia—they hunt down and eat feral cats.

People in Vietnam eat dogs. My husband, while in Vietnam, was invited to a village with others for dinner, maybe lunch. Anyway, dog was served. Did he eat it? Yup, as did everyone.

The eating habits in some nations would make most of our people "upchuck". Dogs, for example, are Not respected in Asia, like they are here. When I was in Thailand, I noticed that dogs were treated badly. It appears that their religion says that Evil people are reincarnated as dogs, and a good Thai considers it his duty to kick any dog he comes close to, so as to aid in that evil spirits punishment.

He, he! Reminds me of the 2 months I spend traveling all over China. My guide was suppose to arrange for me to go to a restaurant to eat dog meat but he got drunk so we never made it. Guess I will never eat dog. It's was suppose to make you strong, said my guide.

In Vietnam it made you still alive.

Not much of a meat eater here and would never eat a dog or cat. Would rather starve to death.
Not sure if I could do it either, then again if the people you are having lunch with get easily insulted and they have guns, well, I’m pretty full, maybe just a little bite. 🤣

The sanitation rules/procedures when preparing foods of all kinds need to be addressed and resolved. Any meat out in the open for long periods of time will not be refrigerated and will have flies and other types of bugs crawling all over it, there are many open air markets in China and meats in particular are out in the open throughout the day, that in itself is a recipe for this type of disaster along with any the pathogens within the meat itself. I’m not a fan of eating dogs and cats and whatever else but societies that have experienced starvation will eat whatever they can to survive, so unless a person has starved themselves they don’t know what they will eat and what they won’t eat until placed in that position. We live in a blessed country and most of us thankfully don’t know what that type of starvation is all about....

True but if you have ever been in a slaughter house in the US, well, they are not pristine.

The markets in China are in a realm far, far below any slaughterhouse in the United States.
Like everything else, it depends on the slaughter house. My son was in China for three weeks with his girlfriend, they ate at several street vendors which were known to the family. He sent me pictures of, well, hanging raw meat. No bugs or flies and he never got sick from the food.

We agree to disagree and that’s OK
