No laundromats

Since my washing machine broke, I've been taking my laundry to a laundromat the next town over because there is none in my town. This necessitate a 10 mile round trip carrying a large basket of wash. I know a person on the village board and a village trustee and I sent them emails asking if there was any chance to get one in town. One said to keep talking my wash to the other laundromat; the other said it there was one at one time, but it went out of business and we would not be likely to get a laundromat in the future. No one gave me a reason why we can't have a public laundromat here. What could be the reason for the reticence? We don't have a liquor store or barber shop either, but those aren't a big concern to me. All we have are 2 gas stations/convenience stores, a post office and four pizza/sandwich shops.
 

I haven't used a laundromat for ages...but the last time..I washed my clothes...but when it came to dry them all the dryers were full with service washes...there were about 30..before I could get my clothes anywhere near a dryer..so I protested..and got a dryer within 5 mins...

Get your washing machine repaired..Laundromats are quite expensive here..and after all the hassle of driving there..possibly waiting for a machine and dryer..it ain't worth it!!
 
Laundromat I could live without. Liquor store is a totally different proposition...
 

Why not open one? Get a small business loan and rent a building. Buy or lease the machines, hire a plumber Now, you've solved that problem and you have some income, if your town is large enough to support a laundromat. Good Luck!

Or, just keep taking the clothes for a ride cross town.

Really, I am just teasing you a bit. I was raised in a small village (boro) and I noticed when I went through the old village several weeks ago, they now have a laundromat. The town at last count has about 900 folks there.
 
Any business has to be able to make a profit to survive. Since most homeowners have washers and dryers and most apartment complexes have laundries there is just not enough support in a small town. Why haven't you considered buying a washing machine? It seems to me it would be much cheaper in the long run.
 
You do actually meet some nice people...The lady who owned the laundromat gave me some beautiful towels to dry my dog with..

I once sat next to a pair of Chinese students..and helped them put their washing in..and showed them where to put washing powder/money/choose the washing program etc...

After about 5 minutes I could see £20 notes stuck on the inside..getting washed..no way of opening the machine..they had to just sit there and watch..

They were shouting at each other in Chinese..

Money laundering?...:cool:
 
The only time we had to use a totally public Laundromat was when we were in Las Vegas for a week in 2005. It had nice looking machines, a tv and snack vending machines. One thing can be very true......not all Laundromats are "nice looking"! And, sometimes some pretty shady people can be hanging around, when there is no Wash, Dry, Fold Service in it.

The last two apartments we had had a washer/dryer in them. We did live in one apartment that didn't have a washer/dryer in it, but did have a Laundromat in the complex. Wife and I would get up at 6AM on Saturday, head to the laundry and get it done. Because of the time, we were the only ones washing/drying. Got our laundry done pretty fast using 3 washers and 2 dryers.

Most homeowners have their own washer/dryer and most apartment complexes now have a washer/dryer in each apartment.

I've seen where some Laundromats are located and it's not the most desirable areas for some folks to go into.

I agree with what rkunsaw said about making a profit. There is just not enough business in many small towns for almost any business to thrive. The town where I live has so many empty buildings. We do have a thriving liquor store, though.
 
It's difficult for me to get my head around the idea that some people don't OWN a washing machine and dryer.
They're as essential as a kitchen sink, toilet, toothbrush etc.

You'd be better off getting your washer repaired.....or, better still, buy a new one.
 
Remember, Falcon, not everyone has the finances for a repair or replacement (used or new). For a homeowner, that is when a close relative/friend (if there is one) comes into play or the old Laundromat.
One of the nice things about living in an apartment, like we do, if a major appliance breaks down, maintenance will either fix it or replace it........for free!

If they can afford a computer and the power to run it AND pay for internet access, then they should be able to buy a washer, even put it on a time payment plan.

sorry CR..we don't have that in England...Here, the maintenance will repair a broken WC..or a window...but if your washer/dryer breaks down..you are st*ffed..!!
 
Well, don't know about that! Will be looking forward to hearing from those that can't afford it.........if there is indeed any.

Laundromats are not seen as often as they were 10 or fifteen years ago.
We live near a small town with a population of 2500 and there used to be four laundromats.
Now there is just one probably because there just wasn't enough business for them all.

Debodun I hope you can find a place to have your washing machine repaired although it is not easy
to find appliance repair people now either.

There are liquor stores around here in every town and some villages. The government takes in a lot of money
from liquor stores so they seem to be essential. I can do without them with no problem.
