Laundering a large, heavy knitted afghan

After that quilt disaster a few weeks ago, I am dubious about washing this afghan. Every time I move it, some of the fringe falls off and it has 2 "bumps" from where it had rested on the back of a chair for decades. It seems a shame to trash it. Not counting the fringe, it is 65" long and 39" wide. That's a lot of yarn. I just discarded another afghan, but that was small and in even worse condition that this (it had holes and bad cat odor). What would you do?

If you care to hang onto it and want it clean, I would look at hand-washing it in the bathtub.
