New bath towels, and my love/hate relationship with them!

Not only do I need to rethink brands, I need to rethink the way I buy. :)

The more surface area, the more absorbent the fabric. Loops provide more surface area.

You do what I do, run them into the ground before buying new. LOL!

If it weren't for the break-in period of new towels, I'd buy them more often, like maybe once every 10 years instead of every 15 years.
 
I don't buy new towels often, but i don't like them when they get scratchy, do buy quality, thick and absorbent, don't remember the name of the ones i usually get, but they do last.......my issue with all new towels, the fluff that comes off them for the first while, get through that stage...good to go for years.

I've never paid much attention to brand names when buying towels, but I sure will be now. Will be so nice to retire my old set and relegate them to general purpose household cleaning cloths. :)
 
Costco carries good quality bathroom towels. They come in a variety of colors and last a long time.

In my earlier post I failed to mention that it's not your imagination if you notice towel absorbency to follow a bell curve. The lint that comes off towels in the dryer is the breaking and fraying of fibers. Initially, the microscopic broken areas create more surface area and absorbancy. After a while though, those fibers start to break off, resulting in thinner towels and decreased absorbency.

Most fabrics "wear out" from machine agitation rather than from human use. That's why hand washed and line dried items look like new for so long.

We all know that the best way to "break in" a pair of jeans is to wash them 10 times or more to remove some of the dye while weakening and breaking some of the fibers.

Never gave a single thought to Costco for towels, but I'll sure have my eyes peeled now the next time we go!

Your mention of new jeans jogged my memory. I recall the big thing when I was growing up related to jeans, was to put a new pair on and run through the sprinkler in them or take a swim, then let them dry on you. Apparently, doing such made for a better fitting pair of jeans. LOL!
 
My wife bought some new Sonoma brand towels from Kohl's, a few months ago. Those things were very thick and bulky and almost like trying to dry off with a blanket. After using them for a few times, and running them through the washer/dryer several times, we gave up, and donated them to the local animal shelter....they make better dog blankets than bath towels.

LOL! Your experience is mine to a T, with these latest towels. Hoping they come around soon, or I may just be visiting the same idea you and your wife opted for. :)
