Do You Read Books/Watch Shows About Stuff You Would Never Do?

I get hooked on a certain topic for awhile. Like I have read tons of books about living in the wilderness of Alaska, Canada and Antarctica. Would I ever want to go there? No! Even for a vacation? Absolutely not! I just enjoy reading about people living a different lifestyle.

On YouTube I was watching video channels about people married to a Chinese spouse and living there. I was really into it and have watched most of their videos already. Till it got into the COVID-19 stuff. Some of that was hard to watch due to not being sure they actually knew what was happening.

Now I watch several video channels about people who own parrots. One is about a couple who train parrots for others and they also have a magic show with their parrots in it. Their channel is really good. I will never own one, but my boyfriend has one so this is interesting to me. I think that is why I started watching it.

My newest interest on YouTube (though I still watch the others too) is about people who live in a van or a rv that has been converted for full time living. I would never want to do it myself. But I like seeing all the things they do to make it a home. The solar part is of interest to me since I lived with it for over 20 years. Now if I was a younger woman, it may have appealed to me. Not sure, because I was not really a traveler. I never really cared for it even though I did do it. It is amazing how so many women my age are dong this. I see why though. Money. It is cheaper to sell their house and buy a van or rv and have it outfitted for this life style. I follow several of these channels. Actually they give me good ideas for organizing my small apartment! And like many say, this way they know they will not be homeless (as long as no one steals their van, I'd guess). Gives them a lot of independence.

Do you find yourself reading about the types of things you would never want to do? I guess I am always curious about others and their culture and how they think. So YouTube to the rescue!

Kat, I think what you're doing is WONDERFUL! I'm opening up to learning so many things lately. Reading and studying about people and interests I never indulged in before; history, metaphysics, philosophy, so many things! Only one difference. You said you would never live or visit the cultures in the wilderness. If I had that opportunity, I'd be gone in a flash!
But,I agree, U-TUBE is awesome! I'm proud of you for opening your perspective to find out about varied lifestyles and possibilities.
Good for you!

Mostly I prefer material about things I wish I could do but can't.
As for your question- the opposite- I've always been fascinated by everything to do with surfing: followed competitions in magazines and t.v., music, watched in person when I lived on the coast, took pictures, and like to read both fiction (such as Kem Nunn's Tapping the Source) and non-fiction (such as Shaun Tomson's The Surfer's Code).

As I'm landlocked, it's obviously not an option. However, there's also the factor that I'm terrified of water!!! :ROFLMAO:

I enjoy that also and it's easy to get hooked watching the van/RV living channels. I'd love to do that as a traveling second home but never would.

Other topics I get interesting in are things I run across in genealogy and in historical fiction. I've mentioned before that I believe we have genetic memory. Although the book and movies aren't historically accurate, The Last of the Mohicans story based on the capture of Fort William Henry by the French has captivated me since I read the book in Jr High. When the Michael Mann movie came out, I got interested in researching colonial life and dress and it's an interest I kept through the years. I have old out of print books I've collected about the era. When I first joined Pinterest, I created boards about colonial life including dress.

Doing genealogy, I discovered that a 6th great grandmother married in Philadelphia the day the news of the Fort William and Henry massacre was published in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Not only is there that connection, but her dress was sketched circa 1900 and few exist from colonial days. I haven't yet researched where it is now, but hope to see it someday.

Another interesting tidbit is that her birthday is one day apart from my real one ...not what's list here because I use random birthdates for websites. The Scorpio genes must be strong!

Link to her dress. The site wouldn't let me post it as a pic. Wedding date in the caption is incorrect.

I would love to time travel and visit with her ...obviously not going to do that. šŸ™ƒ

When I was younger I devoured books and magazines about self-sufficient, back to the land, alternative lifestyles, etc... I finally realized that becoming self-sufficient was just an illusion and required more sacrifice than I was willing to make.

As mentioned in the original post I still surf the net and watch many YouTube videos on a wide variety of subjects. Many of the things I will never do but I also find many small things that I can incorporate into my daily life.

These days my interest is in learning more about people who embrace a minimalist lifestyle. I may never adopt a truly minimalist lifestyle but I learn a little tip or two from every article or video that I find on the internet.

At this point in my life, I would miss the internet more than my car.

I watch Alaska: The Last Frontier. Love they way they can live so much from the land. Life Below Zero as well. I do not think I could do it, but interesting to watch.
Less adventurous, but I love watching videos about people who buy storage units for resale. Not the Storage Wars show, but real people who have You Tube Channels. Amazing how they can pay a few hundred dollars for a unit at auction, and find thousands of dollar of resale value. Also, other resellers who buy return pallets from places like Amazon for resale, Sometimes the stuff is not great, but othertime a couple things make the purchase price worth it.

I sometimes get hooked on some of that reality crap. I was on Pluto the other night & was surfing & came across something called Curvy Girls. A show about aspiring plus sized models. Didn't take long to get sucked into it. LOL

I have watched all those shows!

I used to be an eBay seller so I watched those types of shows too. It was amazing the things they would get. I always felt bad when they paid a lot but nothing was worth selling. Though I found that selling on eBay, just about anything will sell for something.

Homesteading and writing about it was my life! I try not to think about it now.

I have a brother who has always been so into history and he has a wild west show where they put on shows at various places during the summer. Not this year though. Not even one. He is really into the clothing and the guns. In fact, he building guns for others as well. His house is a library of books on history.

I am into genealogy also. I am on Ancestry daily working on my family tree. I have many famous historical people in my tree and when I find someone who peaks my interest.............off I go to research them! Now their homes and areas where they lived are places I would like to travel to. I do believe that connection with our ancestors is important to discover and sometimes I dream about them.

Thank you! Maybe if I was younger or didn't have trouble walking. I can't even walk in the forest now, which I used to do daily. This is why I am never bored living alone.

Speaking as a lazy old couch potato... I love to watch shows and docs about people devoting their entire life and training for elite physical careers or competitions, such as dancers and athletes. Recently enjoyed Cheer on Netflix and Ballet, Sweat and Tears on Youtube.
