Birthday parties & birthday cakes (back in the day)!

I was just having a great conversation with, @JaniceM, about kids swallowing things, and remembered attending birthday parties as a young child, where the moms would bake a birthday cake with change (yes, loose quarters, dimes, pennies, nickels) inside the cake, and whatever treasure you found in your slice was yours to keep!

Does anyone else remember this fun but crazy birthday party tradition from back in the day?

My 10th birthday - 1962. Had my school friends for a party. There was also an obligatory attendance school band concert on that day too. I remember my mom had to get special permission from the school to have the girls excused form the concert to attend my party. It wasn't easily given, either. Sadly, the two girls I'm standing between (the one with fine blond hair and the one looking at the camera) have passed already.

This is so sweet!

I was one year away from being born when that picture was taken, and I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your two childhood friends.

Such a reminder it is as to how short life is and can be, but what memories to be able to reflect upon photographs such as this.

I remember birthday parties were an all-out event when I was young. Such an exciting time it was.

My Mom surprised me for my 16th Birthday....She had my friends hide in the basement and Mom brought me down to the basement, she told
me she thinks there was an animal down there....She first took me to a store where I wanted a dress I was wanting....Then the kids went
in the backyard to get to the basement....to hide....

Love the story, Peppermint!

Now the left one you have the correct row, but not the right kid. The right photo you're getting colder (you were in the correct row your first guess as I mentioned). I think that's a boy on the far left front row. :sneaky: I mean right and left as you look at the photos, not the people's right and left.

Okay, Deb, here we go with attempt #3! LOL! I told you I was terrible at face recognition!

Okay, left picture, you are in the front row (far left - second in)?

As for the right picture, you are in the third row behind the front, and you're sitting (far left)?

I have heard of coins in Christmas plum pudding or Twelfth Night Kings Cakes but baking them into a birthday cake is new to me.

Birthdays were always pretty low key family events when I was growing up.

We received a couple of small thoughtful presents and were always allowed to choose our favorite dinner including the type of cake but that was the extent of it.

I always chose a warm pineapple upside-down cake with fresh whipped cream.
