Tourist Snaps Toes Off 200-Year-Old Statue

A statue of Napoleon's sister in an Italian museum lost three toes in an unfortunate encounter with an Austrian tourist. Police say the man broke off from his tour group so his wife could take a photo of him "sprawled over" the plaster cast model of Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix, created by sculptor Antonio Canova in 1804, CNN reports. Three of the statue's toes were snapped off in the process.

How pathetic.

We really do live in a self-serving world, and from all that I see and hear about on a regular basis, it sounds to me as though people are getting more stupid, too.

A prime example as to why EVERYTHING needs to be under lock and key and clear glass case nowadays, courtesy of individuals just like that.

Unfortunately, stupid can't be fixed.

And disrespectful, too. When we were in Rio, we went up to visit the statue of Christ the Redeemer, and there were a number of tourists taking selfies in all kinds of disrespectful poses.
I saw a cartoon about a selfie stick-it said camera on one end idiot on the other.

I couldn't agree more, Bowmore, and what a shame as to the happening you witnessed.

Tourist behavior such as this is why many of the major art museums have had to employ guards who are positioned in every room to prevent visitors from vandalizing, touching, or otherwise making physical contact with the art, which is itself often encased or behind protective covering. In many cases, they do not even allow flash photography. The guards stand statue-like themselves, but are quite vigilant...

He has apologized for his stupid behavior and has offered to pay for all repairs to the statue. It's too bad, but these should be roped off from the public's ability to get near these statues. I remember what happened to the Pieta at the Vatican which is why it is now behind glass. It has been repaired, but scarred forever.

I wonder if his "apology" would have been forthcoming without the video surveillance tape.

And what do you know, for once it wasn't a goofy American tourist.
Yes - - glad to find that there are still a few people around the globe, that are more stupid than us. Watching the news, I've been having my doubts. We seem to have a fair share of "dim bulbs" lately.

The owners of the museum should be put in jail. Why aren't the artworks roped off so ignorant fools cant break them. Perhaps a DO NOT TOUCH sign might help.🤪

I liken the ways and means of some adults to that of children.

I was ironing one day and one of my sons came toddling in to see what mommy was doing. I told him, "hot-hot, do not touch", and I whisked him out of the room and directed him to go play. Minutes later dear son came back in, made a beeline for the ironing board, reached up, and touched a finger to the hot surface of the iron.

DO NOT TOUCH signs and even DO NOT TOUCH words (for some), fail to resonate with them, they still do what they want to do.

Inconsiderate, irresponsible and disrespectful come to mind.
