We have decided to see how much ti will cost to reroof before we decide to add insulation. I did my homework, checked reviews, picked an expert roofing company, and made an appointment to have a free estimate on my roof. I explained my roof was small, about 1400 sq feet, and simple.
He arrived on time for the appointment, but I was not impressed with his attitude. The person who represents a company should be very personable, he was not. But everyone has an off day. When we told him we wanted to know about replacing the rafter, he asked did we want him to go up inside the roof and look at it. Yes.
I supposed he could have used his X-ray eyes, but I wanted him to check the rest of the roof to see if there were any more broken rafters, he said there was not. They would add a rafter to the one there, as I suspected you never remove a roof support. You just add a new piece and bolt it to the old one.
We are waiting for the estimate, but he gave us a ball park figure-between 8000- 9000 which I thought was high. The shingles he wanted to use were expensive, but he said “everyone” is going to this type of shingle. Hmm, then he pointed to a few houses on the street that had those shingles. They will last 50 years.
My response, I got maybe another five years. I don’t need a 50 year roof. Are you leaving the house to a child? Yes, but since they are over 45, they don’t need a 50 year roof either.
. He will email the estimate along with financing info through their company.
As he left, he said and if you need new decking it will be more. Decking is the plywood on the roof. That comment put him out of the running. We will not use this company. He was inside my attic, he should have been able to tell if any of the plywood needed to be replaced. He was on top of my roof on the outside. He should have been able to tell if any of the deck need to be replaced.
He also claimed we have two layers on the roof. I don’t believe this, I am sure there is only one. We will see with the next estimate. Tomorrow I will call another company that specifically says their estimate will be complete, including any new decking that is needed.
