The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill became the first big university to move in-person classes online after new coronavirus outbreaks. Just one week into the semester, 177 students had tested positive, and hundreds of others were in quarantine because of possible exposure.

U.N.C. officials identified four clusters of infections in student housing facilities, including one at the Sigma Nu fraternity. And The Times has linked at least 251 cases of the virus to fraternities and sororities on campuses across the country.

(So sad and again, we knew this would happen :()​
 

More breakouts and quarantines within the colleges:

East Carolina University moved at least 17 students into isolation off-campus after they had an outbreak at one of the school's dorms on Monday.

An entire sorority house at Oklahoma State University is under quarantine and isolation after 23 members tested positive for COVID-19.

Colorado College quarantined 155 students inside the Loomis Hall dorm after one student tested positive for COVID-19.

At least 189 people have tested positive for COVID-19 at the University of Kentucky since classes began on August 3.

Iowa State officials told CNN that 2.2% of students, or 175, tested for COVID-19 received positive results.

These outbreaks should be no surprise to anyone who is paying attention to 99% of the doctors and epidemiologists who are on the front lines of this virus.

Those who are focused on the 1% who swear it's no big deal and prosperity is just around the corner, are undoubtedly furiously working their spin machines to come up with ways to dismiss, distort and minimize the facts.
 
Iowa State University administrators issued a stern warning that a failure to abide by the school's rules and continuing partying could lead to remote instruction, after over 175 students tested positive for the virus.

Some schools are already acting swiftly, and threatening disciplinary actions against students who do abide by the set protocols.

Purdue University has suspended 36 students, including those who had hosted a party and those who had attended the gathering in violation of social distancing policies.

Ithaca College, in upstate New York, informed its 5,500 students on Tuesday that it would not be welcoming them back to campus this fall.

Just last week, big-name universities such as Stanford, Brown and the University of Pennsylvania all announced their decision to keep students at home.

Here's what I don't understand about this. Every single administrator had once been ages 18-23. Maybe they weren't away at school at that time, but they all went through that stage of life. Do they really believe that human nature rearranged itself in the years since they were young adults?

Alcohol and pot consumption, abundant on virtually all campuses, further lubricates a young adult's already strong inclination toward ignoring risks. Did they think this would disappear when the virus hit?

"Not only did the number of people in attendance exceed the state limit on the number of people at a gathering, but attendees were not wearing masks or adhering to physical distancing guidelines," said college administrators in a letter to the community, calling the behavior "highly irresponsible."

The kids were being highly irresponsible? Sounds to me like administrators are at least equally irresponsible. (Like that old tale of "you knew I was a snake when you picked me up," they know the innate nature of the age group they're dealing with.)

A New York Times survey of more than 1,500 American colleges and universities — including every four-year public institution, every private college that competes in N.C.A.A. sports and others that identified cases — has revealed at least 26,000 cases and 64 deaths since the pandemic began.

(OMG and still rising as I type :( )
 
MORE THAN 1,000 students and faculty at the University of South Carolina have tested positive for the coronavirus in the past week, driving the school's positivity rate to 26.3%. :(

According to the university's COVID-19 dashboard, 1,017 students and nine employees have tested positive for the virus in the last week. The positivity rate among students is 27.7% and the positivity rate among employees is 6.8%.
