I have watched cricket. I understand how the score is calculated but can't figure out what overs are.
There is a playground in my city where they play cricket.
Let me try to "confuse you further", er I mean explain......
One guy gets the ball, runs up maybe twenty yards, give or take, then releases said ball in very specific manner, all governed by strict rules to avoid " chucking", and if its a legal delivery, aimed at or near the three stumps 22 yards away at the other end of the pitch, that is called "one ball".
Repeat the exercise six times in total, and this is then called "an over", (except back in the 1970s, when they flirted with eight ball over for a short spell).
The next "over" will then be bowled from the other end of the pitch, (this being done in case there is a slight slope on the whole ground, to try to negate or mitigate that factor a little, plus maybe wind direction, some bowlers better with wind behind them etc).
Does this help?
The umpire gets to shout "over" to signify six balls have been bowled, and of course the side "in the field", (i.e. not batting), have to all run around into new positions to take into account the change of ends!
One last requirement in order to play cricket is the "stiff upper lip", which of course means not showing emotion of any kind whilst playing!
