That's messed up.

This is why prevention when it comes to critters big and small is critical. Put that food away as soon as done and clean areas where food was. Most critters come into a home seeking food for a reason ie scent. Don't give them a reason. That and cut off their entrance.

A gas leak. His sense of smell must have been diminished with age. He’s lucky it was only minor burns.
Depends where the gas leak is.
Four years ago, I had a gas leak that I couldn't smell because it was in a pipe behind the stove & most of the gas went up into the wall, instead of into the kitchen. I only discovered it when I was lying on the floor, adjusting the leveling legs on the stove, which put my nose close to the floor. The gas bill was a little higher for a couple of months, but not much more than the usual variation between seasons.

Even the Gas Co. Technician couldn't detect the leak with his meter & after checking everything in the house, he said "No gas leak," & left.
I asked for another more-experienced technician & he moved the stove & found it.
