"Set in your ways" or "Been there, done that"

When I was young I thought old people were set in their ways. But now I'm thinking it's just that when you get older you have tried so many things that you can pretty much reason out beforehand you won't like many of them. I've always been too careful about wasting money, probably because my parents grew up in the depression and it was preached to me. That may be a factor too.

For example, I was slow to get a cell phone. Couldn't live without one now, but it's just a simple one. One day I'll get a smart phone, but they have to give me some reasons that make sense to change first. (Or more likely quit making the stupid ones. Ha!).

Is this just rationalizing the fact that you've become an old curmudgeon?

Examples where you have been slow to change?

It wasn't me..it was my mother..

She used to use an old ''twin tub'' washing machine....where you washed them in one side...put them through a mangle....rinsed them..put them through the mangle again...and then spun them in the other half of the machine..

So I decided to buy her a new state of the art washer/dryer for her birthday..

I paid a surprise visit..and there she was with the old ''twin tub'' standing next to the new machine..

''It doesn't get them so clean'' she said..:D

I admit I'm set in my ways when it comes to new technology - still don't have a cell phone, but do plan to get one soon, as I get older it becomes important, and very handy. Also find sticking to my usual safe habits and routines is not always beneficial, so now I'm expanding my horizons and getting out more and meeting people.

That's a good one Twixie. Maybe she's right! With all that extra work you'd expect to get some benefit, wouldn't you? ;)

It's well known that our generation is technologically impaired. It just doesn't come easy to us or is 2nd nature like the younger people.. We didn't grow up with it and it's intimidating. Someone brought up the old wringer washers... My mother refused to change from those even though her last machine had to be special ordered.

I got my fingers caught in that wringer I don't know how many times..good job they were rubber!

Agreeing with Nancy - have tried a lot of things, arrived at the routine etc that works best most of the time. I remember helping my mother with the wringer washer, catching the clothes as she put them through the wringer then putting them in the cold water in the deep tubs for rinsing, then repeating before hanging on the line in the back yard. However, she was thrilled when she finally got an automatic top loading washer. I got a cell phone fairly early on at my last job before retiring. It replaced a pager. And I have a cell phone now. It isn't ''smart'' but it does a few things. I refuse to be a slave to it tho - spent a lot of my work life being ''on call'' and the only people I'd ''drop everything'' for are my kids and grandkids. But also learned thrifty habits from the parents.

I have an old "flip phone" that does nothing but makes and receives calls.. Which is all I need it for... I have a computer at work and several computers at home. It's against the law to be on the phone while you are driving, so I would imagine surfing the net while driving is too.. Since my car is about the only place I don't have the net and can't use it there, What's the point?

I didn't get a desktop computer until 2000, and I still use a prepaid flip phone, no camera or internet, etc. Bit of a technophobe here, don't think I'll ever be getting any smartphones, etc. No use for all that really, not tied to any device...except maybe the TV at times, lol. :tv:

My husband bought me a small computer in 1984 to use in my store and one of my customers made a database for my inventory. I was 'hooked' and then began doing websites for small businesses in my area. Also did genealogy research. I'm for easy and if I can find a way to get something done that saves time and is easier it just gives me more time to 'goof' off.

I did have a cell phone for emergencies when I drove but now just have a landline. I'm fairly adaptable and not very set in my ways. Have to be open to try new things as long as they don't boggle the mind. Lately I've been going through tons of recipes and adapting them for use with one or two people. Also on a low carb eating plan that has seen my blood pressure drop over 10 points so I'm adapting 'goodies' recipes to fit. It keeps my brain working...

I can blame it on my daughter. A few years ago, she bought me an Apple Ipod and told me, Dad, you can have a lot of fun with this. Well, see was right as now I have my IPad Air, a Apple laptop and when I can swing it, I will get a smart TV. So Sue, see what you started?

I agree with 'been there done' that because older people have experienced a lot more than many younger people. But 'set in your ways' is a whole different ball game. And yes there are some set in their ways, some for the good some for the BAD. 'set in your ways' is another way of saying a person WILL not change, they can change but they refuse to change.

In a person 'set in their ways' I mostly see ignorance & impatience. I also see some one who was probably a bit of a teenage rebel and sees learning something off of someone else as complying with authority. Most people that say they are set in their ways simply don't want to learn especially the current generation of seniors because they brought up in a era where a high school education was an education/all you really needed and technology moved slow enough that you might have to learn a few new things in life. There's still phones laying around the house from the 50s and 60s(what was junk 20 years ago will hopefully be an expensive collectable I don't know about NOW)-I digress.

For the most part 'been there done that' and 'set in their ways' are simply reasons, excuses and rationalizations for someone who doesn't want to learn or doesn't want to do it again(which might not be a bad thing if they've moved on to something else).

The title of this thread could also be: What's Your Excuse?

My situation is exactly like yours. Have access to computers and the internet whenever I need it. Don't need to have it in the grocery store . . . grocery shopping takes up too much time as it is.

I got into a conversation with a lady at the library last week. She told me that she was re-reading all the books by one particular author for the 4th time around. When I asked her what she had read that was new she replied that she liked books that were familiar. Now to me she is certainly set in her ways.

A few months back my son saw that I was using my portable CD player tucked into a Fanny Pack to take on my walks.. and he shamed me.... No not really, but he did laugh at me carrying around that "manhole cover". SO Hubby and I went out and bought Ipods.. and I love it!! I have nearly 400 songs on mine.. BUT.. let me tell ya.. it was a nightmare for me to learn how to use it.. and I get so frustrated and uptight if I can't get things to work the first time..

I thought self service checkouts were a great idea..

''unidentified item in the bagging area''

''please call for an assistant''

When you get alcohol..you have to call an assistant to see if they ''approve''

Then post your money through a small slit...God help you if your notes are wrinkled..

Nah..I'll just go to a normal till..

I DETEST self check outs.... they never work right and I ALWAYS have to call someone over for some reason..

I do that Twixie; Sainsburys have just introduced 'pay at kiosk or pump' for petrol here; all I here now is 'car at pump1 press the button for pay at pump or kiosk' and that is before you start!

Lol Vivjen...It happened to me..I stood there like an idiot waiting for the petrol..and a loud booming voice said ''Press the appropriate button!!!!''

It's all going too fast..

The Asda petrol station here will only take credit cards..so if you haven't got yours on you...no petrol...

Yes..there are usually 2 or 3 ladies standing round watching..having to press a ''code'' in when something doesn't register...helping people who have messed up....

Just put them on a till!!!...

I have one of those prepaid phones too, but mine has updated technology including wi-fi, can download hundreds of songs, apps and a lot of things some smart phones can do if I really want to. I don't use it for all those things, I mostly just use it for calls and have maybe 20 songs or so on it. What did I pay for the phone $20 on amazon. :D Can pick and choose how much I want to spend and minutes are doubled or tripled for life. My minutes never run out because I make most of my calls, anywhere in the country, for free from my computer using google voice mail. If there a way to save, I'll likely find it sooner or later. I have an older phone that I paid $10 for that I got from tracfone before on sale and I just use it as one would use an ipod, I was looking for a good price on an ipod when I didn't find what I want and purchased the new phone, wala the old phone fit the bill. If you use your phone a lot, then this probably isn't for you, but I'm rarely on my phone, so this works perfectly for me.

Just so you can see the phones I'm talking about:

Holy cow, the price is even lower now and phones more prepaid comparable to smartphones for under $50, but you will:

QS, that was the funniest thing I've read all day. Thanks for the laugh. :lofl:
