For Pecos...Women who deserve more recognition...

Yesterday I posted a comment about the lack of statues honoring women. I still can't think of one.
I can't think of any either. On the top for the Oregon Capital building is a statue a woodsman holding an ax, a pioneer man who shaped the state. I'm from a long line of loggers. None of them were built like this guy. They were just hard working guys, cutting down the forest to try to earn a living. Trouble is, men didn't do anything alone. Oregon is a pioneer state. Often times the women were the ones who did mountains of work and the man was off doing something else or ran away from family responsibilities. It happened to several women in my family, back when women had no way to earn a living. A strong woman needs to be beside the man on top of the building.

Yesterday I posted a comment about the lack of statues honoring women. I still can't think of one. It is widely known when a soldier gets injured in combat the word most uttered is "Momma".
I know that I have seen "generic" statues honoring women like those honoring military nurses, but I cannot immediately recall one that was dedicated to a specific woman. I have never seen any statues honoring women in the entire surrounding neighborhood that I live in here in the Aiken/Augusta area.

It is not like this area doesn't have women who deserve recognition, they just don't honor them like they should. Juliette Gordon, founder of the Girl Scouts of America is from Augusta, Astronaut Susan Still Kilrain, and Leah Ward Sears, first Woman Chief Justice of The Georgia Supreme Court are all from this area.

Peace Pilgrim - a truly great woman
Information from peacepilgrim.org
From 1953 until 1981, a silver haired woman calling herself only "Peace Pilgrim" walked more than 25,000 miles on a personal pilgrimage for peace. Wearing a blue tunic and carrying just a few worldly possessions in her pockets, she shared her simple but profound message in thousands of communities throughout the U.S.: “when enough of us find inner peace, our institutions will become peaceful and there will be no more occasion for war.” Today, her words – captured in books, videos and other media – continue to inspire people around the world

From farm girl to peace prophet

Born Mildred Lisette Norman on July 18, 1908, Peace Pilgrim grew up among a close-knit extended family on a poultry farm in Egg Harbor City, NJ. After enjoying the "flapper" era as a young woman, her inner compass slowly moved toward seeking a greater purpose. Following an unhappy marriage, she embarked on a personal transition that culminated with her hiking the 2050-mile Appalachian Trail – the first woman to do so in one season. On this journey, she had a vision that guided the rest of her life. Relinquishing her name and possessions, she stepped out in front of the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, CA on Jan. 1, 1953 wearing a blue tunic imprinted with her new identity: PEACE PILGRIM. For the next 28 years, she criss-crossed North America, touching many thousands of hearts, minds and lives as she walked joyfully on her pilgrimage for peace.

Friends of Peace Pilgrim
Following Peace Pilgrim's untimely death in 1981, a number of friends she met from all over the country came to New Mexico to honor and share memories of the amazing woman who changed their lives. This gathering gave birth to the classic book Peace Pilgrim: her life and work in her own words and also spawned a volunteer organization, Friends of Peace Pilgrim. Run by a dedicated board of directors and supported solely by donations, our mission is to preserve and spread the legacy of Peace Pilgrim. We do this by sharing her everyday wisdom and messages of peace through her writings, a biannual Friends of Peace Pilgrim Newsletter, special events and other outreach.

Her writings and teachings
Along with the classic book, Peace Pilgrim: Her Life and Work in Her Own Words available in 18 languages (including English), Friends of Peace Pilgrim offers a wealth of print, audio and video compilations of her writings and teachings. Among the most popular, with more than two million copies distributed, is her booklet, Steps toward Inner Peace, which, in addition to English, has been translated into 31 other languages. In the spirit of Peace Pilgrim, these offerings are sent for free to all who ask. Many can also be downloaded.

One thing I'm noticing is that with the majority of these women they are not all made up with coiffed hairdo's & the whole nine yards. They are fairly simple women who appear to have been more focused on life than on their looks. Too bad today's women aren't more like that.
I'm not today's Woman!!! I have a pony tail with a rubber band around it....with no make up on...and a mask I have to go to the
store for food with our ninety nine ford truck cause our brand new car was totled…

The young ones still think looks are so important. They haven't realized what's important yet. It's part of the growing process.

Peppermint - Sorry about your car. How awful.

Just so everyone has an idea of what Grace Hopper wrote programming for...these are the computers from back then. Can you imagine how daunting the task?

I can remember computers like that, Marci. When I was a programmer back in the 70's and 80's, Grace Hopper was widely venerated as the inventor of the COBOL programming language, which was used for most business applications. (Probably totally obsolete now, along with those giant mainframe computers.)

My husband used COBOL when he was in the field. Interesting that Grace invented it.

Local fire chief being hailed a hero
BLUE RIVER, Ore. -- A small town fire chief is being hailed a local hero. Upper McKenzie Rural Fire Protection District Chief Christiana Rainbow Plews -- who most people call Chief Rainbow -- has been battling the Holiday Farm Fire since it broke out. She helped protect structures from more damage and saved lives all while her family's home and fire station was crumbling down.

Indeed, she is a hero! Thanks for posting this, heroic women don't always get the credit they deserve. I hope that she gets the help she will need to rebuild her home.

I wonder what those great Women would think of the fanatical side of Feminism that's on the streets today
When someone a group of individuals have been systematically discriminated against for so long, it's time to ongoingly stand up for themselves. If that has never been directed at a person, often times he/she does not understand. For those of us who have been denied things because of our sex or our race, there comes a time to stand tall against all comers.

Yes I agree ,but the Fanatics are doing genuine Feminists a disservice and what about
the Karen's how do they fit in

Fanantics of all kinds, be they religious, political or whatever will always be with us. Humanity is massively immature. Men who order their women about, women who order their men about, political leaders who lie every time they open their mouths, religious leaders who think they are gods, etc., people who throw tantrums, no matter their age or position in life, all of them do everyone a massive disservice. We need to take them with a grain of salt, stay away from them when we can and erode their perceived power base.
