especially when the first few pages contain family tree schemata the plot mixes in historical figures.
Jane Smiley's Early Warning fills the bill. On top of that, it takes place primarily -- so far -- in the 2nd half of the 20th century: my salad days
. Yeah, it's a pain at first to refer back to the family tree but after the first 50 pages or so, you have it locked into your memory banks.
So far the historical figures are McGeorge Bundy who was JFK's top VietNam war advisor and Rev. Jim Jones.
I'm up to 1977 and looking fwd. to the remainder.
