Remember trying to climb creaky stairs without waking parents?

Does anyone remember trying to climb creaky old staircases, after having stayed out maybe later than you should, into the small hours, and trying to take each stair so slowly, and carefully, placing your foot right against the side, or one or other side, trying to remember which one made the least noise?

"I must have done this a few times", in my parents very old farmhouse, with strong boards on each stair, though a bit worn or cracked some of them perhaps, through centuries of use.

My parents used to refer to my courting " eight nights a week",(meaning seven nights, including two visits on Sunday to see my fiancee)! :)

Yes, I remember Friday nights after going to the village dance...creeping up the stairs on the outside edge. I found out afterwards that my mother lay awake listening for my safe return.

I had been out to a party. I lied to my parents, I told them I was going to school dance. So they let me have the family car. Well, I was "liquored up", and I had to drive the car into the garage. The problem was the right over the garage was my sleeping parents. I got the car halfway into the garage. It was close, but I did it. Except for the door handles on the car. This was in the 1960s, and GM and Ford hadn't come up with concept of flush door handles, they stuck out about 2 inches. The door handle caught on the metal garage door track. As I carefully inched forward, I ripped the track out of the wood frame. At 3 AM, that sound in an echoing garage.......................

No, I just stayed out until they went to work
A farming friend of my fathers said he and all his brother were kicked out at fourteen years of age to make their own way in the world, (this friend starting out by working on the raids before getting his won farm, and all the brothers did well too, but were made of tough stuff, as I'm sure you can imagine!).
No need to worry about their parents hearing them climbing the stairs therefore, but your method worked too, so long as you could cope with work next day without having slept much I'd guess. :) .
