Only One “Merry Christmas” This Year

Only one person has said ”Merry Christmas” this year. It was from a young cashier at Walmart.

Perhaps it’s from the lack of snow until yesterday. Maybe because I’m not shopping as much. Or it could be people are tense because of Covid.

There’s even a lack of lights up compared to the norm

It’s feels rather depressing and I’m not even a major participant of events.

I do like the Christmas threads here.

I see two things at play here, the first one being, the younger generation is out of touch with holiday greetings, and the second one, shame on employers for not conditioning their employees as to how to address customers this time of year.
 
I thought saying Merry Christmas was cause for terminating employees because it is for Christians only. That started years ago may 6 or 7. I don't see Merry Christmas banners and no persons working retail say it. Everything is Happy Holiday."
 
Not being out too much, I’ve concluded this could be a poor poll of whether it’s being said. So I decided I should be saying it when I’m on the phone to businesses. Concluded my call to the UPS lady with a Merry Christmas. Her voice absolutely lit up with the same to me. I have one more day to do this when I buy milk tomorrow or encounter someone while walking.
 
I've exchanged a couple of Merry Chrismases with people I see regularly at the park. We said it because we weren't sure we'd see each other before the holiday. It's still kinda early, but I expect a few more from my neighbors tomorrow for Christmas Eve and Friday. There are some lights and decorations in my area also.

Two people have said it to me-my older male neighbor who lives downstairs and the manager. I got 3 Christmas cards also.

I haven't heard "Merry Christmas" from much of anybody, but then I haven't been much of anywhere in the last couple of weeks. And places I've been, like to pick up groceries curbside, have little to no human contact.

I've never quite understood why people get so clutched up about what holiday wish someone gives them. I see "happy holidays" as an attempt not to tread on anyone's toes and I don't see it as a repudiation of the meaning of Christmas, but just, as I said, an attempt not to offend. But I don't see why some take offense in "merry Christmas" being wished to them if they are not of the Christian faith. Merry Christmas isn't an attempt to ram one's faith down someone else's throat. I also don't see anything wrong with my telling someone I hope they have a lovely Hanukkah even though I am not of their faith. At the same time, I don't see the offense in someone else's wishing me a happy something else, because, after all, "something else" is a day on the calendar and I don't have a problem because someone wants me to have a happy day.
