Cars Are Getting Stranger & Stranger

Same here in the USA. The Kia Sportage I bought new in 2016 had no spare. A can of something came with it. I did buy a donut spare from eBay at around $200. The dealer wanted $295. My KIa Soul does have a donut spare.
$200 for spare? I can get a good used tire for less than a $100.

Happy birthday win ...

When I got my brand new merc , last year,
The guy gave me the keys, and said bye.....:>:>:>:::>:>
I couldn’t find the hand break or the gear stick ...🥴
All on the right hand of the steering wheel .......very strange ,🙄

A friend of mine just bought a new [too him] 2016 Kia Optima .......He's reading the phone book sized owners manual now. :giggle: Good looking car, he says it drives nice, suits his needs.

Your new car had a hand brake? Mine is electronic; just a button to push. Same wth "Drive," "Reverse" & "Park." Just buttons.

Speaking strictly as a mechanic, I'll settle for a nice Model-A. (would hate to have to diagnose an electrical problem on those there new fangled cars). ;)
Actually they're easy to diagnose. The mechanic hooks up a computer to the car & it pinpoints the problem in a few seconds. Much less skill needed from the mechanic.

Yes, hooked to an OBD computer works sometimes. However, there are times when an OBD scanner will only direct you to a general area that may be a problem. Throw in a corroded ground connection ( a common condition in salt country) somewhere on the vehicle and the diagnostic tools are worthless. It then becomes a time consuming (expensive) job.

I would be even more impressed if it had a button to cool the steering wheel.
Considering the temperatures you’re having in Australia I don’t blame you.

That’s new that I haven’t seen. You have lots more space for cupholders, etc.

My car has "run flat" tires. No spare, no can of "fix-a-flat", etc.
Us too. Driving to see family means driving through the mountains with absolutely no place to fix the tire. This is a feature I would avoid next time.

I could use this now because eye sight is getting worse.
The infrastructure to accommodate self-driven cars is very costly, and with trillions now being spent on the pandemic and loss of revenue due to unemployment cause by the pandemic, we may never be able to put the infrastructure in place, or at the very least it will be delayed for decades.

In fact this pandemic will greatly delay progress in many technological fields, imo.

Does it warn you with a flash or does the voice talk to you?
It just displays a photo on the dash or on the Heads Up Display of the sign. It replaces the photo with a new one each time you pass another sign.

Ok, now I want that. I have no idea how to use half the things in my car and it’s four years old now. Every winter I have to find the steering wheel heater, fans, etc.

I just learned something else. I've been pushing the "Park" button. I don't have to. When I shut off the car, it automatically shifts into "Park." That's a good feature. If the driver forgets to put the car in park, it prevents the car from moving while the driver or passenger is getting out. Older drivers sometimes do that.

Why do we have to depress the brake now..?before the engine starts
Safety & Lawsuit Prevention. On some old cars, if you're not in neutral & you start the car, it will move. Requiring a foot on the brake also makes sure kids can't start the car; they can't reach the brake pedal.

My 2000 Ford Pick-up has this feature.

After 505 miles on the first tank, (with 1/4 tank left - another 100 miles), I decided to fill 'er up.
I forgot how small the tank is (12.8 gallons), so when the pump stopped at 11 gallons, I thought something was wrong with it, then I remembered. I was used to my Altima's 18 gallons.
Looking at the $30.00 cost for a fill up felt like I was back in time when that's what it cost to fill your car up - 70's or 80's?

Some of these new features seem meaningless until you experience them and realize they are helpful. Our neighbour has the HUD and said it has kept him from inadvertently speeding.
Also nice, along with your speed, the display also shows the speed limit on the particular section you're on. And it takes a new photo every time a sign shows a different speed limit.

New cars are becoming more "sophisticated" with every passing year....more and more electronic controls, etc. That's fine until this stuff begins to break....especially if the problem is intermittent. If the dealers Code Reader can't find the problem, the costs and frustration will increase substantially. Listening to the ads on some of these cars, it appears that the "entertainment" features are a higher priority than the mechanics of the vehicle.
Insofar as self driving cars are concerned, I would be a bit afraid to be in, or around those. Computers can be hacked, or have a "glitch".....a real potential disaster in fairly heavy traffic at highway speeds.
I worked on computers virtually my entire career, and I have seen some strange stuff.
