Ego driven males

I have a theory not all males who seem self-absorbed are aware they are focused on themselves. I have a coworker, nice guy, except in the course of general conversation he hijacks the topic and makes the conversation about him. If he introduces a topic of conversation in order to gain further attention, he takes the back door approach by saying something like this; I’m reminded when, recites a personal scenario in which someway was victorious or achieved greatness.

I usually play mind games and word substitution for entertainment, however, I do not believe his mode of conversation was intentional, more so about how he learned to communicate. Many people are unaware of proper social etiquette and recognizing social cues. It is sometimes difficult not to judge each other.

This reminds me--no wait, it really does!--of a boss I had: I got so tired of him always interrupting me, so one day I said to him, "Please don't interrupt me." And he says, in all seriousness near as I could tell, "No, don't you interrupt me when I'm interrupting you! I'm your boss and more important than you, so whatever I've got to say is more important than whatever you've got to say." (Can't say I miss work at all.)

Knowing that I am a work in progress, I take a personal inventory on a regular basis.

Thank you for your post Ed, I am adding this topic to my inventory list. :)

Without first hand knowledge of this person's behavior, I can only say that you may be being too critical of him. If he stays on the original subject but gives his point of view from his own personal experience, and doesn't drone on and on and dominate the conversation, it may not be that bad. Again, I'm not there.
