Should I send a sympathy card to my aunt-by-marriage?

The brother-in-law of my mother's sister-in-law just passed away. I wanted to know if this relationship is close enough to warrant sending her a sympathy card. I don't know how close she was to her brother-in-law.

I never worry about etiquette.

If sending a card is a sincere heartfelt gesture on your part then do it if not I would let it go.

If I didn't personally know the family of your mothers SIL, I wouldn't send anything.

My rule-of-thumb: send a card if you think they would send you one.

But sometimes I do anyway just to be nice.

This would be an opportunity for me to use one of those numerous "freebies" that various charities have sent me. Most of them are actually pretty nice these days.

Why not? Expressions of sympathy and condolences are always warming to the hearts of those who have lost a loved one.

You may not have known this person, but sympathy has no boundaries. I would send a simple card.
