Britain’s Oldest Inn...Pathe News 1958

Thanks!

The video reminded me of an eccentric innkeeper named John Fothergill and his Spread Eagle hotel.

At the ripe old age of 46, he said, “ I found that I must do something for a living, so I was counseled to take an inn.”

I ran across a copy of his little cookery book years ago in a thrift shop.

Our friends run The Drovers Inn a picturesque pub in a chocolate box village. The pub started life in the seventeenth century but I just cannot find out when exactly. If anyone is good at internet searching do please find out for me. Currently they have been surviving by turning the pub into a retail shop for essentials. It has proved to be most welcome amongst the neighbouring community. All being well, the will soon be serving us again. My wife and I are also looking forward to August when the pub's landlords get married.

The olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans...near us... is dated back to the 11th century and is still open to this day... we have a drink there often...it's tiny inside but over the years it's had a few extensions but the foundations are from the 11th century.... it's situated in the grounds of the Park where St Albans Cathedral sits... I have photos somewhere...

Love that pub Holly, there's something about those picturesque old inns that just draws you towards them. I remember one with a huge open fire when we visited Stratford-upon-Avon. The heat from the log fire filled the room, mind you, ninety percent of the heat went up the chimney, not that you would care. The warmth of the welcome matched that of the fire.
