Does anybody listen to todays music or do you prefer music you grew up with?

My growing years began with big bands, wartime music, swing, early rock into soft rock. When the screamers and shouters came along, I would listen to my records. Then some groups recorded a lot of oldies in a slightly upbeat manner and I do enjoy that too. Classical music was always a favorite of mine since we had it in the household much of the time. I do not like acid or hard rock at all, much less grunge or rap. Some of the older country songs weren't too bad, but not really a fan.

As a Baby Boomer I must love the sixties pop revolution. Wrong, I was given a huge stack of 1920's & 30's records by African/American artists, when I was just a small boy, that most have never heard of, but they are Rock & Roll long before that expression was coined. I love Big Band, Doo-Wop and popular Jazz too. A DJ tried to tell me that Bill Haley & The Comets had the original hit of: "Shake, Rattle & Roll," the fellow had never even heard of Big Joe Turner. Said it all. I remember John Lennon saying that before Elvis, there was nothing. What a conceited thing to say.

I'm with you Lois..I cannot abide Rap.. hard heavy metal...or any of that type of music...

I don't listen to a lot of music, but when I do it's on CD's with music from the fifties. From other decades there are the protest songs of the sixties and disco from the seventies that I like, but from all time periods and generas, there are individual songs that stand out.

I don't particularly listen to today's music...I hear it but it washes over my head. When I want to dream and be lost in a trance, I listen to classical music, I grew up with that.

I have loved all kinds of music since childhood. Grew up hearing mostly big band stuff on the radio or the classical stuff my dad would play on the piano. I was about 7 when rock 'n' roll was being born and my older sister, 13, would drag me into her room, point to the radio and say, "Listen to this!" and make me dance with her. Good Times.
I've enjoyed all the music through the 40s 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and into the new century until it all became over produced plastic pop crap. So sad.

I fell in love with psychedelic rock and psychedelic music when I was 16, and my love affair with psychedelic music continues daily. SSDI determined I was no longer disabled and thereby capable of supporting myself due to erratic and unsustained work history and earnings. Back then, any inkling of gainful employment proved detrimental to maintaining SSDI and Medicare insurance.

I needed psychiatric hospitalization but I had no insurance so I ended up at a State Psychiatric Hospital outside of Atlanta Ga. with nothing but a radio for company. I listened to college radio stations because the music wasn’t like the mainstream music found in corporate music stations.

Psychedelic rock music helps me with imagination, abstract reasoning and connectedness. I like Blues, Blues Rock, Classic Hard Rock and Classic Prog. Country music doesn’t do anything for me, the same with Christian music.

I like Acid Rock and Space Rock, various meditation music sound compositions, Brian Eno, Tibetan Bells, Gregorian Chants.

I like to open my mind to see where it will go.

As a very young child, I listened to Big Band music on the radio and the popular singers of the 40's and 50's .. then I listened to the variety of 78's that my father had - mainly classical. From there, it was the 60's songs on my transistor radio.

On YouTube, I've found a treasure-trove of music history, mainly early blues. We're so fortunate to get all this music for free on the internet.

I definitely listen to "new music" although I don't listen to music popular on top 40 or top 100 these days. There may be a few songs or artists that I like that break into the top 40 but it's rare. Sia and P!nk are two of the "popular" artists that come to mind that might fit that rare category.

I usually listen to at least 40 new albums each year and those sometimes include music from new artists and bands that have put out their first album.

I tend to like music that falls into the alternative and indie pop and rock categories but I do enjoy music outside of those genres as well. There are a handful of artists and/or songs from the 60's and 70's. I still enjoy but most of the music I listen to is from the 90's and beyond.

The older bands I still listen to are The Beatles, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Devo, Elton John, Cat Stevens and The Sex Pistols. I also like several songs from many other artists, but I don't listen to more than a small percentage of their work from the 60's and 70's.

The sixties to the early eighties for me but I do like the Corrs who came along in the nineties and Dark Sarah.
But I often listen to you tube suggestions and find I like some of todays stuff....

Just want to compliment @Mr. Ed for always asking interesting questions!

I should try to expand my love of popular music to include more of today's stuff, but it's hard to get beyond Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, etc. I do like Billie Eilish. Trying to get to know & like more. I like to be current!

For me, though, the best is from the '60's & '70's RnR, from California to Europe. My top three are Beatles, Stones and Zeppelin.

I forgot abut Billie Eilish, I liked her album as well so that's another popular new artist I enjoy quite a bit.

I'm a data geek and love recording and processing data. I rate all of the songs that I listen to and keep them in a spreadsheet. This thread got me wondering what years my top 20 artiss are from. Here are two top 20 lists, one with artists who have 20 or more songs out and another with 4 or more songs out. I chose 4 because that's often the number of songs on an EP which is the type or release that a new group or artist will often release as their first available recording. The second list also has the place in the top 20 with over 20 songs places in the 4 or more songs artist list. I've also included the date range of releases and any artist with 2021 in their latest date might not have released anything in 2021 but I know they are still active.

Most people will not know most of those artists in my lists. Artists with the same number are tied for that position.
