Daylight Saving Time

Camper6, why can't you just leave your clocks set for DST? You still have your extra hour of sunlight, without having to change your clocks. If an hour extra of sunlight is beneficial in summer, why isn't that same hour beneficial in winter?

I can do that easily enough but the whole province changes.
Standard time etc. was invented so people could travel by train and get to the destination where sunset and sunrise co ordinate. That's why the west coast is three hours different.
In winter in many places you get up in the dark and come home in the dark. Changing the clock in winter wouldn't change anything.
It's like a blanket that is too short. Pull it up to keep your neck warm and your feet get cold. Pull it down and your feet get warm and your neck gets cold. It's all due to the tilt of the earth as it orbits the sun. You can check the change in sunrise and sunset at your latitude. My preference is an extra hour of sunshine in the evening. Outdoor people like golfers and gardeners love that extra hour of sunlight especially those who have to work 8 hours.

Tonight - at 2 am to be exact here in the EU and the UK we turn the clocks forward and go on to Daylight Saving Time. Possibly for the last time as the EU plans to do away with Daylight Saving and let each member state decide if they wan to to have permanent DST or normal time.

They tried that in Britain many years ago, 1968 - 1971 we
were in GMT+1 and it failed miserably.

As it states in the link below to a Glasgow Herald story, from
2011, the people clamouring for this change are all under 50
years old and don't remember the last experiment.

It might be OK in the European mainland, but we are in another
time-zone, the original one.

all winter long my husband gets up in the dark, works all day in the dark ( and electronic light), and drives home in the dark....

Altering the clocks doesn’t change the amount of daylight...just the hours you get it...
i would be happy to stay on GMT all year.Who needs daylight at 10pm in June?

I had to laugh at how surprisingly true this is!! I have several clients and a friend who wait for me to reset the clocks on their microwaves and ovens after the time change. And at least one friend I can remember and possibly two who have to take their cars to the dealers to get their clocks reset!! 😂

Here in Sweden the newspapers and TV go out with an explanation every spring and autumn on whether you should put the clock forwards or backwards. Some people even get up at two a.m. to do it.

I have remained on standard time because full retirement allows me to. For my scheduled covid shots and doctor visits, I went back to DST for a few hours and when I returned it was back to standard time. I've always bean an early to bed and early to rise person, so now I don't have to get up when it's dark and to bed when it's light. I get an extra hour to let the dew dry on the grass before cutting, and an extra hour for the day to warm up for outdoor recreation. It's nice to be independant of "the man" finally.

My last digital clock went crazy and within a couple of days of resetting, was an hour ahead before DST came into effect. I had to get a new clock. I've gotten used to it so it doesn't bother me. I only have one clock to set, my devices automatically change. I read that some states here in the U.S. are moving to keep DST. And a couple of states and some territories do not observe DST.

A wise old Indian once remarked that DAy-light-Saving-time is as dumb as cutting a foot off the bottom end of a blanket and sewing on the top end, and thinking you have a longer blanket.

I agree!

Being retired, I don't care what time the clock displays....unless I have an appointment somewhere. We've probably got a dozen clocks, including wristwatches, and the oven/microwave....and it takes a few minutes, twice a year to reset them...when I get around to it. The Only one that is a PITA is the digital wristwatch....I'm almost ready to toss that thing. The primary "plus" in DST, IMO, is a reminder to check/replace the batteries in all the smoke detectors.

Nobody thinks bout their pets when the clocks change!

Dogs get one bowl of food a day and in the Fall they have
to wait an extra hour to get it, while in the Spring they must
eat one hour earlier, same for cats, but they probably don't
really care.

Mike.
