Kitchen Aid Mixer Motor Question!

I’ve had this Kitchen Aid mixer for at least 2 decades now. It’s had a lot of use and the motor is going/gone.

It’s a heavy machine but an incredible one.
I’m wondering if this is worth moving to get fixed. I wish I fixed it earlier. A new motor is about $100 and I’m not sure about labour costs or shipping.

Would this be worth moving or should I just donate it with all the other stuff?

I'm all for zero waste, but if I were in your shoes, Keesha, I would be spoiling myself with something fresh and new!

I would check prices on any mixers you might want to replace it with. Even at Amazon.com, the prices are huge. (I seem to recall that we got ours at Macy's, and the price was half of what is being quoted now. But that was some years ago.)

You could also find a repair shop, to check what their prices might be.

@Keesha that's a hard one. I have one also and my son fixed it. He got it to run but he said the parts were quite worn. You might get a new motor and something else will go on it.
I know one thing, if you decide to get a new one it sure won't last as long as the old one and probably is so light it will bounce right off the kitchen counter.
Hate to be so negative but I have replaced several small and large appliances recently and I'm not happy with any of them.

Check out QVC.com. They always have them and if you apply for their "Q" card, you'll get an extra "easy pay". I've used it in the past and it's so helpful, especially when they have a free shipping offer.

My mate's wife told him that she wanted a Seimens Mixer for her Christmas gift. She wasn't a bit happy when he took her out into the garden to show her, her new Cement Mixer.

Yep, that's where we bought our Kitchen Aid Mixer. Still running strong after 20 years so far. I would buy a new mixer that way all the gears inside the mixer are brand new also not just the motor. If you do buy a new Kitchen Aid, don't throw out the old attachments that came with your old mixer because they will still work on the new one.

I've had ours for 28 years; I received it as an anniversary gift and it is still working. $100+ to get it repaired is a bit much but the new models are quite expensive, I hear. Don't know what to tell you; sorry. I'm knocking on wood in hopes that ours does not break down. I use it a lot. I also have their hand mixer (KitchenAid).

My opinion. Get a Paderno hand mixer. Paderno is an eastern Canadian company. When my wonderful Kitchen Aid died I replaced it with a cheaper brand that I loathed. Then I decided to just save space & replaced it with this. I have a ton of bowls that I can mix in.

Of course you’d wait until it’s on sale. About $80.

The best feature is the timer. When the recipe says mix for two minutes, I can see it right on the handle.

Also, any excess weight that you can get rid of is a good idea. Do keep the attachments, just in case.

not so much now, if it is the motor maybe you
should look at that, if you are technically OK,
if not then a new one is the route to follow.

have had a basic model KA for probably 20 years. if you had told me i would spend that kind of money (at that time), i would have said you're NUTS! my bossy (love her) sil does a lot of baking, especially around the holidays. her chocolate chiffon cake will make your eyes roll back in you head and stay there for a while. she bought a basic white model (treat to herself) and that thanksgiving she demanded i get one! in fact, she FORCED me to take hers home with me that day... with orders to return it the following weekend (or else ).

instead of Black Friday craziness, i made holiday cookie doughs. one double batch after another from butter straight from the fridge. NO wrestling with heavy batter. NO worn out wrist/elbow/shoulder. dough for chocolate chips, peanut butter, oatmeal, gingerbread in freezer waiting for leisurely baking before christmas.

i returned her mixer (saturday after t-day) and stopped at Boscov on my way home to shop. they had the basic white model for a little over $200 AND a scratch-off for 10-50% off. i got mine for 20% off. if it died tomorrow, i wouldn't hesitate to replace it. it is heavy, but will always be worth the counter/island space it takes up.

I’ve actually had this about 25 years now and it’s been a great machine that’s given me such awesome memories so I’m being extra sentimental about it. Having a great piece of equipment makes jobs enjoyable. It’s similar to having great woodworking tools.

I’ve considered buying a new one but this thing is built like a tank and I just can’t let it go. I’ll try and get a new mower. There are places that fix them. One place is not that far from me so I wish I got this fixed while I could.

It IS a tough one which is why I’m posting the question. My husbands been pushing me towards throwing it out but he’s never used it before. It would be similar to me saying he should throw out his chain saw cause the chain needs sharpening and tightening up. I’m sure that would go over well. Lol.

I honestly can’t complain about the service this mixer has given me. I I’ve been making family and friends gingerbreads every year , macaroons, cookie dough, pizza dough, brownies, shortbread, bread dough, biscuits.
Its been such a joy to use I just can’t throw it out. I hope yours lasts years longer.

The accessories I was going to donate but I’m not going to. I’ve decided to keep everything. In fact 1/2 of it is already packed for moving.

Thanks Jules but I think I’ve been too spoiled with my Kitchen Aid. I think if I do decide to buy a new one I’ve had to get a new Kitchen Aid. Maybe I could modify one using parts of the other. Who knows.

You might try this first:

You could cheat, if after you remove the brushes, you stretch the spring a little and reinstall. I did this with the alternator brushes on my old motorcycle. Eventually though you will have to replace them with new.
