Social Security SCAM

The safest rules to follow seem to be: Don't answer a call when you don't know who the caller is. If it's important, they will leave a voice mail. And, if they leave a voice mail and you still don't know or believe who the caller is, don't call them back. If it's for real, they will contact you by mail.

Never open an email if you don't know who it is coming from, delete it.

There are so many scams out there, we protect ourselves by keeping our personal information to ourselves. Strictly confidential.

Isn't it a shame we have to be so aware that we have to protect ourselves with active suspicion? What a world. :mad:

Those "car warranty" notices that come in the mail are just plain stupid. What a waste of time and paper!

I got one from my own number once too. Scammers out scam themselves.

Why?

Because it gives me a chance to waste a few minutes of their time by giving them fake information.

First I act very concerned when the operator comes on the line. I act like I have totally bought into the scam. Then, when he asks, I give them a fake name. They always buy it because they have no idea who they are talking to.

Then, and this is the fun part, when they ask me to confirm my SSN, I tell them.... 123-45-6789.

They hang up immediately!!!!

with all the permutations, could that be someone's ss#?

this topic comes up with fair amount of regularity on sites like this one and i always end up reverting to ALLL CAPS, underlines/italic and bringht color font with DO NOT ANSWER THE PHONE... PERIOD! if i'n seated where i am right now and the TV is on, i can see in top right corner of screen who is calling. if TV is off... just wait the 3-4 rings and see if they start to leave a message. if it's someone you wanna talk to, pick up at that point. and don't go on and on about "the big BUTS".

for me, the number appearing on screen means nothing... i don't know any by heart... at all.
 

It seems that over the past year the number of these scam calls and e-mails has increased substantially. Most of the calls we receive show a local, or area phone number. If we don't recognize the phone number, we just let it ring until our phone asks them to leave a message...which never happens....then I add that number to our call blocker. Sometimes I look up the number on "reverse lookup" and it almost always shows no name associated with the number....so I guess that most of the time these hackers are using unassigned phone numbers. When I get this crap in my e-mail, I move it to the Spam folder, then delete it....without opening the message...of course.

There must plenty of people out there who answer these calls, and/or open the e-mails, and fall for these scams.
 
i'm actually thinking of leaving a voicemail that tells people if you want me to respond leave a message. that way i don't have to answer.

That's basically how we do it. We recognize our family/friends numbers and answer them....if we are outside, etc., they leave a message and we call back. IMO, if a caller doesn't leave a message, that is a Sure sign of a scam.

well some of the folks i know don't like voicemail. and i don't like having to wonder who is actually calling me lol!
 
Social security scam is used for a lot of fraudulent activities, we all know how strong our SSN is , it covers every details that is to be known about you and it dangerous to the owner if given out to the wrong person. if you have mistakenly given out your SSN and it has been used for fraudulent activities you should contact the authority and your bank letting them know you have nothing to do with the fraud and follow every step to ensure you are safe from more fraud
 
Anyone who gets a call or an email about something so upsetting needs to consider that it’s probably a scam. There are scams about car licenses, car insurance, car payments, bank accounts, social insurance, identification theft. Most of these places never make phone calls. If they were wanting to reach you, they’d send official documents with phone numbers you can verify and use. Real agencies never rush and scare you into making any quick irrational decisions whereas these places use this type of tactic to their advantage all the time. If you ever get a call where you are frantic with fear, HANG UP!!!
It’s probably a scam.
