Florida Principal Who Paddled Girl, 6, Was in the Right: Authorities

State attorney declines to prosecute

The Florida school principal caught on video paddling a 6-year-old girl did not break any laws, the Florida State Attorney found after conducting a review of the Clewiston incident. No charges will be filed, CBS 12 reports. Central Elementary School staffers say the girl purposely damaged school computer equipment.

That is despicable!

To stand there as a parent and witness (and allow) such to go on without steeping in is twisted, but the wind-up and delivery of that paddle to that child is absolutely stomach-turning sickening!

I just showed my husband this and he said if it were one of our children being disciplined that way, he'd administer a beating so severe, they'd be lucky to live through it.

As for myself, I would have snatched that wooden paddle from the principal when she was done and split her head open with it!

I raised six children and spanked each and every one of them, but not once did I ever resort to using a paddle, a belt, a wooden spoon, or any other instrument on their behinds, and I NEVER applied a spanking in my life with that much contempt.

That is one sick individual!

Absolutely sickening. That type of force on a child of 40 pounds, or any child, could severely damage the Spine, etc. This teacher needs to be busted down, not only from teaching, but from this Planet. I hope the family sues the hell out of her.

The teacher should not have done it but the parents should have given her a couple of hand slaps on the bottom. Also they should have to pay for the damage she caused to the computer equipment. There has to be some form of discipline and evidently the parents have not taught her anything.

I completely side with you, Terry, that a reasonable level of punishment should have been handed-down, but not using 1" (or thicker) wooden paddle the size of cricket bat, with a woman on the end of the bat the size that the woman is, and the blows delivered with the passion of that of an MBL player looking to cinch-up the playoff season with a homerun.

We don't even know the damage done? It may amount to pittance? Parental liability/responsibility laws, and I'm sure FL has them, will mandate the parent (s) pay, if able. The article also stated that Corporal punishment was forbidden in that County's school system if I heard it right?

Excellent points, OB.

The part of the article that really ticked me was this snippet.

"The office also found no evidence of "great bodily harm, permanent disability, or permanent disfigurement."

My guess is, child abuse is legal, acceptable, and the status-quo in Florida!

However, on my side of the pond, the dullard that had the audacity to spew such off should be dragged into a back alley by their hair and slapped-up the side of their head until they lose control of their bladder and bowels, at which time an equal point would be made that encompasses, there is no evidence of bodily harm, permanent disability, or permanent disfigurement.

Sounds like my Catholic school back in the 1950's. Admittedly they didn't use a wooden paddle, one teacher used an old slipper, the head teacher used a wooden cane. Right across the buttocks. And this is on children aged between four and ten years old.
Our Catholic school principal used a cat-o'-nine tails. I was on the receiving end one time. I think it instills a bitterness in the recipient. Buckeye wrote about setting off a firecracker. I set off a cherry bomb years later in the church hall during a church bazaar. It was done, I'm sure, as a subliminal method of retaliation.

The last time my mother spanked me, I was 11 or 12?, and had just set off a fire cracker in the church parking lot after sunday morning services. She used an old fly swatter. I never again set off a fire cracker in a church parking lot.
Buckeye, I'm not laughing at you or the spanking you got, just laughing at the fact your mom used a fly-swatter on your butt. :giggle:

Too bad examples weren't made of sickos like that!

The stupid "Office" did not provide a medical opinion, but a "damage control opinion". Are they going to say "We have an X-ray machine and all looks well"?

I'm also sure the "Office" personnel are experts on bruises and various levels of skin colors indicating internal blood clots? Morons.

That, and psychological damage.

I wonder what the scare factor is in the child now, her level of trust (or lack thereof) in authority.

Years ago I turned down a position in Lake Havasu, NV because the schools permitted paddling. I didn't just think of my son enduring this treatment, but even seeing it and knowing about it is bad enough. It's atmospheric. How dare they!

Right, what is the legal limit on swats, 5-10? How hard? This is a true story. In JR high, a teacher wished to make an example of his "power of the paddle". He took the student out in the hall, but with the door open so all could see. I'm telling you right now, the swats he received were of G- force nature. To escape the Earth's gravity, a rocket must travel 7 miles a second, and I tell you I would have rather felt that than that paddle.
