Yeah, I, too, heard both. It's hard for us to realize how formidable mountains were to our ancestors. You , westerners, laugh at our Pocono Mountains (PA). But I live there. You're either going up a steep hill, or coming down a steep hill. If you're driving an ox cart, you're doing neither. So the Rockies were this enormous barrier.
