Physician-assisted suicide

What do you think about physician-assisted suicide? I absolutely want to have that choice! The one problem with probably all of the laws is that the person has to do something him/herself. In some cases the paralysis or tremors are so bad that it's impossible. This, in my opinion, is absolutely horrible; anyone should have the option.

I have no desire to be housed in a nursing facility, not knowing who I am or where I am. So many linger for years with zero quality of life. Someone changes their diapers... if the facility is adequately staffed. Someone spoon feeds them. They don't recognize family or friends. They just exist to run up the profits for said institution. Bill for as many days as you can keep them breathing. Gotta have full beds or we won't make our annual profit goal... even if those beds are occupied by vegetables.

No! There should be legislation passed whereby a certain number of physicians... preferably two or three... can agree that viable brain function is gone and will never return. At that point, if the person has made their wishes know beforehand someone can push the button and put them to sleep.

It's rather funny how we don't let our pets suffer like that.

I'm all for it, and we have it here in Canada.

As some of you may know I worked in a Nursing Home for many years
I would go past the rooms where the Nursing Home residents lay in foetal positions unable to move
I would often stand outside their rooms and think these people were once just like me....always brought ears to my eyes
When they were my age I bet they never would have wished to end up in a foetal position in a wet bed
I would sometimes go in and just pick up one of their hands that was so tightly clenched into a fist
I would talk soothingly to them and rub the clenched fist and you know the fingers would always uncurl
No I do not want to end up in a wet bed in a foetal position....would you????

Not all nursing homes are torture chambers, my sister who is 91 is reasonably happy in hers. She hated it at first (November last year) and complained that there were some people who were 'off with the fairies' most of the day but she hunted down three other women to play bridge with and they get together twice a week. Fiercely independent, and a very fussy eater, she actually said the food's 'not too bad', so she's slowly coming around. I might mention that it's a Catholic-run home, even though she isn't one. She paid a deposit of $100,000 up front but not sure if it is refundable or any other monetary arrangements.

If we should get dementia as we age, our loved ones will eventually have to put us into care because there is no other choice. And we won't care, because we won't know what's happening.

Hope I die in my sleep. Part of my prayers each day is to let me go peacefully. The kids know that now at my age to just let me go and I have signed the paperwork. It was different at age 50 when I had my first aneurysm and almost died.

Marci, by the something going wrong, do you mean what if the assisted suicide attempt doesn't work, or something else?
I pray I never have to make the decision to be assisted or commit it self inflicted. In Ohio suicide is not a crime, so attempted suicide is not, but you may be subject to a lawful mental health hold. Self means may not work, then you could end up a vegetable?

Sometimes there's complications because of the drugs they have to use. Someone on here posted a video on it. If your stomach can't handle the meds and it vomits them up then there's other issues and they have to run you to the hospital or something. I guess from there they gave you a shot? I can't recall exactly but it's not 100% foolproof.

That sounds like a cash-grab to me, Mellow?

Anything with Catholic attached to it is an automatic out for me, courtesy of the long history of, and of course, the latest mass grave of all the children found in Canada.

It’s a bureaucratic process that can be delayed.

One of the better precautions is to have a Do Not Resuscitate on file. My cousin had and it was used after his stroke. He was 74.
I've come to believe it's necessary to have Do Not Resuscitate tattooed across a person's forehead and chest! But, then, it won't be on yellow paper and signed by the necessary people.

The problem with physician assisted suicide is determining when. If my DMV photo is not all that flattering, can I call my doc, and end it all? How do you know when enough is enough? Should you determine that on the judgement of a person, who wants to kill himself?

If your photo is not flattering that's between you and DMV - your doc did not take the pic.LOL. However, hopefully you will be in your right state of mind and can make the decision for yourself and not have to suffer. If you are in your right state of mind, you will know when enough is enough. Sadly a lot of elder people suffer and prefer not to be suffering but have no choice due to their mental state and its a financial gain for the facilities.

My family is aware I do not want to be kept alive on machines...nor do I want to suffer. Once my quality of life is gone, I will go with it with a smile on my face in knowing I gave it a good shot..which will bring me Peace.
