Time for a new bed!

So we bought a new bed today.

We tried a number of beds, a few with pillow-toppers, some latex topped, a few that had memory foam tops, and the single one bed hubby and I both came back to was the Stearns & Foster. It stood out of the crowd.

It's a "tight-top" version, meaning no pillow-topper, and is firm. The store couldn't organize delivery today, which isn't a problem, but we're on the delivery list to have the mattress and box-spring delivered on Monday, and I can't wait.

Due to the mattress being approx. 14 inches in depth, our old mattress pad will not fit, so we bought a gel cooling mattress pad which I'm doubly excided to experience.

I'll post another follow-up on Tuesday of next week to share our experience related to.

Big thank you to all who took the time to drop-by this thread and share their thoughts, experiences, and advice.

Sounds like a real good one and pad--like what I'd like to get too--gotto get to the mattress store!

For those that sleep hot like we do, Ruthanne, I highly recommend a gel cooling mattress pad/protector.

Wish I experienced the effects of it before blabbing off to you like I am, but I've read a number of reviews on it and it's worth it's weight in gold according to all of the thumbs-up on it, but I'll be sure to post all next week once I have a chance to experience the comfort of the mattress as well as the cooling pad.

The technology that goes into the making of a quality mattress nowadays sure has made leaps and bounds over the past 2-3 decades.

Yes, I encourage you to spoil yourself! You deserve it! :)

@Aunt Marg I hope you enjoy your new bed.
I have you all beat as far as age goes. The hubby is sleeping on our 49 year old mattress. The one we got when we were married.
We flip it twice a year and vacuum it as well.
I've slept in my daughters old bed for a few years now because he snores, and has the thermostat set on 90 degrees. I like the windows open or the AC set on 64 degrees. I read until all hours and he likes the radio on which drives me crazy.
It just wasn't working for either one of us.
I bought a foam topper for my daughters bed and it is very comfortable.
Now we both get a good nights sleep.

OMG, Ruth, is that amazing or is that amazing that your 49 y/o mattress is still in service and useable! Now that's what I call getting your monies worth! LOL!

Our mattress was starting to dish in the middle, and hubby has been complaining about being stiff and sore some mornings, so we agreed that it was time.

ROFL! I'm just like your hubby and love a little radio on low as I'm falling asleep. I sneak in a radio often at bedtime, and being that the radio is on my side, seldom does it interfere with his sleep. I think he's gotten used to it.

As for a cool room, I'm with you on that! The cooler - the better! I find I wake feeling more alive, less groggy, and my sinus passage is more clear and free when I sleep in a room with fresh air coming in.

I purchased a new bed last November. The set I replaced was bought back in the days when mattress stores hauled away your old set for free, gave you free goodies like sheets and pillow cases and set up the new set in your home.....in other words, quite a while ago.

I hit all the local mattress stores and was shocked by the prices and lack of service offered. They all offered four or five price ranges nearly identical from store to store. Only one local store would carry away the old set and they wanted a handling fee plus a disposal fee which was in excess of what the local garbage company charges.

After nearly giving up, I finally visited Amazon. I found a bed in a box made in New Jersey that met all my requirements. My box frame was in perfect shape so all I needed was the mattress. I was a little skeptical about the whole rolled and folded bed in a box concept but being Amazon I could always send it back and the price was much lower than for an equivalent bed in a local store. Shipping was free.

Four days later, two young men carried the box (it was heavy) into my house. I cut open the box, laid the mattress on top of my box frame and cut the plastic which wrapped the smushed mattress. It was amusing and amazing to watch the mattress unfold itself and plump up. By evening it had reached probably 95% of its full size (took a few more days to completely expand). From the first night, I have enjoyed sleeping on my new bed.

Goodness me, your bed sounds like something that originated from another planet! LOL!

Never heard of such a bed before, but so glad for you that it's working and meets your expectations, Llynn.

@Aunt Marg , When I look at my hubby in that old bed he is right in the middle and the mattress is folded around him like a taco. He said it is very comfortable. Who am I to argue? lol
ROFLMAO!

Love your description of him in that bed, Ruth! :ROFLMAO:

I recall the beds my grandparents had... single beds with a metal frame under, no box-spring, and just a soft flexible mattress that was no more than 8 inches think. The middles were sagging, I'm certain there was no support, yet they slept like the dead in those old beds.

I wish you years of happiness with your new "baby," Marg. :)

This thread escaped me.

What can I say, what a dream sleep has been. I'm sure any quality mattress today is capable of lulling one to sleep and keeping them comfortable, but we're really thrilled with this purchase.

Has taken a little getting used to the height of our new bed... just under 36", but the firmness is just right, and both hubby and I are sleeping cooler due in part to the firm mattress and special cooling mattress pad we purchased, and no more aches and pains in the morning.

Have also found there's no struggling to get comfortable.

I'm very glad to see your update on this, :)
And glad that it is a good match for what you wanted!
