Coal Rolling or Rolling Coal

Ever heard of it? I hadn’t until I saw it on the news. A truck drove by a cyclist and appeared to purposely spew out the ‘coal’ on him. There was no discharge as the truck went further down the road.

“Rolling coal is the practice of modifying a diesel engine to increase the amount of fuel entering the engine in order to emit large amounts of black or grey sooty exhaust fumes, diesel fuel that has not undergone complete combustion, into the air.Wikipedia”.

The police said there’s nothing they can do because they don’t know if it’s deliberate. If they modified the engine, the owner could be charged with pollution under an environmental act.

Disgusting, even if it was a ‘co-incidence.’

In Texas we have a website you can report a smoker at if you see a thing like this or an old clunker smoking. You include the license number, time and location. At least we used to.

My husband brought to my attention a couple of videos where guys in diesel trucks would pull up to an unsuspecting person, usually a young woman, then roll coal at them, covering them in black.

My stance on the matter, anyone caught doing such a thing should be fined heavily and have their vehicle impounded on the spot, and be sent video footage of it being crushed at the auto-wreckers.

Aren't there "emission tests" that vehicles have to pass? It seems that would be illegal.
It definitely should be, if caught. Here, only the big cities had testing. Since there hasn’t been anything in the media, they may have given it up. The police could definitely give them a fine, if they pulled them over.

In the UK, new diesel vehicles are being fitted with an exhaust "scrub" called, Adblue. It goes a long way to neutralising emissions.
