Marion County Sheriffs Deputy Chases Speeder And The K9 Apprehends Him

While I'm in favour of catching criminals and those who break the law, etc, it chaps my rear-end something fierce that the police continue to put the general publics safety at risk over these asinine and senseless car chases.

So inconsiderate speeding through residential areas like they were where some innocent homeowner is subject to pulling out of their driveway at any time, only to be walloped by an oncoming speeding vehicle.

Good points, Aunt Marg, but why was he on the run? Maybe just fear of law enforcement, or maybe he just committed a very serious offense. It would have been nice if we knew why he was being pursued.

With all this technology in the world, every police vehicle should be equipped with a smaller version something like this:

Never even try to outrun a Police K9 unit.

Sorry about that guy and goil.

Here it is:

I'd say he was wanted for multiple counts of felonious mopery.

I like this device; The Grappler. They've been around for several years but you never hear about them being used so I wonder if they do too much damage or don't work so well, or maybe they're real expensive.

I never heard of it either. Nowadays since all the law enforcement agencies get grants, matching funds, full funding or get to keep these toys after beta testing them and endorsing them for the builders their cost is nominal to nothing for the free advertising and gratuitous endorsements in the police mags and forums. Looks kinda gimmicky and unwieldy too. I don't know how much it weighs or what effect in has on drivability or altering the center of gravity. I hate to think what would happen if the fleeing vehicle flipped or turned sharply to the right or left or even stopped in the middle of the highway while you get rammed from behind. I think I'd pass on this deal. Stay safe my friend.

Lots of good points that never even crossed my mind.

Our("my") Sheriff's Dept. use to have two deputies in a unit on a typical patrol, but there were a lot of wrecked patrol cars(and lawsuits) piling up, from pursuits. It was determined that the excitement would skyrocket between the two deputies, feeding off each others heightened adrenaline, causing an increase in risk taking. So just one deputy now, plus clearer policy for such pursuits.

I can definitely see where that could and would happen.

Pursuits are something that all PA state troopers train for. Being prepared by knowing the protocols along with using proper driving skills learned at the Academy, keeps those involved in the pursuit and the public safe. Protection of property is also a concern. That's the easier part of a pursuit. The more concerning part comes after the stop has been made. There is a long list of do's and don'ts to help keep everyone safe and protected from harm.

Sounds like a pretty progressive department having two deputies in a cruiser. Most departments I know in Northeast metro areas have two officers per cruiser as policy, the brass are driven around by officers so every car has two officers in them. NYSP has two troopers on midnights only. Most of the suburban departments have solo patrols, even the brass drives themselves around. I have yet to see two man patrols down this way. Also a very large majority of the fleets are SUV's. The cruisers are fast disappearing which appears to me that they are akin to mobile substations. I don't know if that was a secondary factor in discouraging high speed pursuits or things just worked out that way. IMHO Stop Sticks and PIT's will always be the safest low tech solutions to evading, fleeing, speeding or whatever the latest PC buzzword is acceptable on any given day. OnStar and other GPS accessed target vehicle remote control techniques are already in use and may soon be replaced by "L band" and "S band" RF based target vehicle control technology. Many people watching "Bait Car" actually thought that gimmick would be the end of stolen vehicles until Myth Busters informed everybody that for the Bait Car system to actually work effectively, every vehicle made would have to have all that junk installed in the trunks in order for it to work not to mention the extra thousands of police cruisers needed nationwide to follow all these potentially stolen vehicles around.
