In Ontario drinking spirits was considered and evil. In 1927 the govenment only allowed sales of wine and spirits at the Liquor Control Board stores (and for gov't profit on the markup). I can remember going in to one in the 60's with my dad and it was very hush, hush. Could not see any of the stock but had to search the printout at a kiosk for want you wanted, fill out a form to hand to a clerk who would bring it back to you in a paper bag. all changed now but continues to the only outlet for wine and spirits in ontario although changing ever so slow. I found it very strange as a kid . People i talk to world wide cannot believe you can only buy booze from one source. Neither can i !

Your post reminded me of the old LLBO approved shot glasses that were used in Canadian bars and restaurants.

We still have a Liquor Control Board in PA for wine and spirits. Only recently have groceries been allowed to sell wine. It's all about government jobs for those connected and money, money, money. We also have a Turnpike Commission to collect tolls to pay for when the turnpike was built, and it was to be disbanded once it was payed for. Never happened for the same reasons.

When I go back to Ontario to see my family, I’m always amazed at the scarcity of locations. Even more frustrating was having to make another trip to go to The Beer Store.

It always surprised me that the LCBO gives Air Mile Points. Why? They don’t have any competition.

We’re more liberal in BC, though not as much as in many states. It started with allowing liquor sales connected to hotels and then soon as every hotel opened those, they permitted stand alone operations. Needless to say, we have lots.

Cannabis stores were heavily regulated. Now there are lots.

In the deepest and darkest days of the recent pandemic, libraries, senior centers, all beauty saloons, barber shops & most stores were closed completely. Groceries stores were limited to 10% of normal capacity. However, booze stores were never shut. Booze went up in sales 10%. Our government strongly "encourages us to buy all the booze we want and to smoke all the weed we desire. Are we lucky or what to have such a nice paternal, caring government?

Cameron, YES I CAN. I live in Pennsylvania, and we have Liquor Control Board Stores. Buddy, you'd feel right at home in PA.

Once a govenment gets involved and seeing income anywhere in the world they have you for life. Vodka taxes were a big source of income during the Tsar's regime, same during the communists and continues today. at least the inflated price of whiskey in ontario will forever prevent me from having a drinking problem
