Web Cam, Going down the river.

I grew up in Port Huron. The area covered by the camera has changed dramatically since those days. Then there was only the original (left hand) bridge. The area beneath the bridge was occupied by a big old cement plant and a paper mill. The current park-like area is surrounded by expensive condos.

I lived in St. Clair, just south of Port Huron, for several years in the 50's. I remember Port Huron as a small version of a big city and the nice drive on a road by the river.

I was a small child in the 50's. Am I remembering it wrong.....was there a Sears store on the river in Port Huron? And a department store named Sperry's? I remember going to the movies in Port Huron with my parents and brother to see Shane.

Yes, the Sears store was just a couple of blocks from the St. Clair River. I worked summers at Sperry's department store during high school. It was a great store but fell victim to shopping malls and closed in 2000. There were two movie theaters in town, the Desmond and the Family.

Yesterday was the start of the annual Port Huron to Mackinac Is. sailboat race. If you happened to be watching this webcam you would have seen some of the 180+ boats, ranging in size from 25' to 86', going out into the lake. This was the 97th consecutive running of the 235 mile race. Back in the '50s and '60s, race week was a big deal in Port Huron.
