Why do businesses display their email address on the Web sites if they aren't going to respond to them?

No one wants to receive a lengthy email. Maybe be less loquacious.

At least with an email address, you don't have to pay anything to use it, whether you hear back from them or not.

I've had this weird experience in the recent past, calling customer service at a company ....
To speak to someone, there was a charge of $4.95 to have my call go thru to a person!

Wondering if this will become the new normal?

Responses to emails you send can vary greatly from business to business and it often depends on the staffing and expertise of their support department. I know of a smaller company with a hot product that is swamped to the point that it's known it can be a month or more before you hear from them. I've emailed others and received a near-immediate response. Brevity, though, is your friend.
 
Most companies are in the business of making money by selling/making something. Along comes the internet, and it fashionable to have a web site. It is a way for customers to find them, and get a quick overview of what the company offers.. But what does a widget maker/seller know about web sites? So they hire firms to create and run their sites. The emails may, or may not be forwarded to the company.
Emails are easy to send, and easier to ignore,. There's usually a phone number on the site., a phone call gets their attention.
 
You might enjoy hearing about an email experience, ending today, that exemplifies stellar communications and support.

Several days ago, I posted a message on a software vendor's forum noting how pleased I was with their software and that it had only one occasional problem (crashing when certain adjustments were made). I promptly received an automated email from them (i.e., support team) outlining steps for capturing and sending them the software's event logs should the problem occur again. That was yesterday.

Earlier this morning, I encountered a crash, captured and sent them the event logs and just minutes ago received an email reply saying they had solved the problem in the next release to come soon and gave me a link to download it now. It doesn't get much better than that!
 
I also sent one to a furniture upholster weeks ago and am just hearing back. I wanted to know how much to reupholster this love seat. Anyone want to guess what the amount was (in American dollars)?

Depending on what kind of fabric you want, I'd guess $1000 on up. Probably not worth it unless it's a piece you really love and can't live without, or is a true antique (verified as being worth big bucks).

I doubt Deb will read this but I'll post anyway. Seems reasonable for the service of pick up & delivery included. What about refinishing the wood work?

16 weeks turn around could work out better since buying another home is in the works. One less piece of furniture to deal with if the new home is a done deal by the time that piece is ready.
 
When I had a family heirloom redone, the material and labour was $600. The wood wasn’t refined. I didn’t want to new looking piece.

These things aren’t designed for comfort. This was an emotional decision.

Adding, my was just the seat that needed doing. There’s no material on the back.
