Seriously Retired

I retired in June 2015 after 50 years of much labor. Predominantly prior to age 45 I was a long-distance trucker having hauled household goods with Mayflower most of the 15 years as a trucker. I also hauled steel, farm equipment, general freight, and groceries. After working 8 years in the construction industry I returned to hauling household goods with Mayflower in the summer of 1991. In September of 1991, I sustained a back injury that required 2 back surgeries, the first of which was about March of 1992, the second in April of 1993 during spring break between the 2 years of tech school.
By September of 1992, I was enrolled in a 2-year technical school at Morrison, Illinois – Morrison Institute of Technology.
May of 1994 I graduated from this tech school with an Associates Degree in Architectural Engineering, having carried a 4.0 GPA, and performed as my class valedictorian, I was 44 years old upon graduation. I was hired by an Architect Firm in Sioux City, Iowa. There I remained employed until my retirement.
Prior to the beginning of my trucking career, which began in the spring of 1969, I spent 6 weeks in the US Army as an enlistee but was medically discharged.
Now my wife and I have our residence in the Czech Republic as we have family in Germany and elsewhere on this side of the pond.
One of the benefits of living in the Czech Republic is the low cost of living.
We often entertain the idea of moving back to America but are stymied by the high cost of living in America, not to mention the difficulty to understand the process of Medicare and subsequent additional insurance. Medical insurance here in the Czech Republic costs us each month a total of about $190 for both of us.
I joined this forum in the hopes of gathering some vital information to help bring a better view of the actual costs to live in America, specifically medical insurance costs.

Yea, I know, it seems ignorant that I reply to my own post. The preceding post was supposed to be entered into some profile page that I could not seem to find. The preceding post resulted from thinking that the intro post was for my profile. How wrong I was. Hope I can find this profile page.

Welcome to the forum, CC.

Once you are satisfied with your profile info you have entered, I can go back in and scrub your original post from the board if you like.

To simplify things, just repost back here with an update, and I'll take care of it for you. :)

Welcome @Covert Codger
It's true that I too, saw your full Intro here, and would likely not have seen it on your Profile page.

Thank you for that full Introduction, for us. You have surely done a lot of work in your life.

I wonder if the rest of your living situation (all of the other aspects, outside of your questions regarding costs here and costs for Medical Insurance here)
is agreeable for you and your wife, as that would enter largely, into any comparisons to living retired in the USA, as well.

It sounds like Medicare and any Supplemental coverage, would be more expensive here, and I have no knowledge at all, of how the quality is, of the medical care in other countries, or in the one you are living in, especially.

Medical is too expensive here so stay where you are. Life is too expensive here so stay where you are. IMO another major financial depression is coming so stay where you are. The USofA (@Aunt Marg 🥰) cannot sustain our current situation, IMO.

Delta (?) Covid 19 is starting a 3rd wave, cases are going up, the non believers are dying. Not a good time to move anywhere IMO. But, hey, if you want to come back, sure, why not, after all the whole world is in a pickle. I heard the UK may not reopen or will shut down or something-wasn’t paying close attention to the news.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. 😁

Welcome @Covert Codger. This is probably a fine place to leave your introduction, IMO. I, maybe others, rarely read someone’s profile page. As a Canadian I know nothing about US medical costs. Feel free to chat and give us a unique perspective of life in Europe.
Yep, I agree.

Welcome, Codger. You could start a new thread in General Discussions to ask about the cost of living, and you could start another thread on the Medicare or Retirement forum to talk about medical insurance.

Welcome @Covert Codger. Am anxious to start reading your posts.

Hello RubyK, I see you are from Minnesota, or so it seems from your post. Sorry for such a delay, I've been on a sort of sabbatical from forum posting. As a matter of course I usually am not one to spend much time on social media which more significantly explains my sabbatical from forum posting. If I am successful in attaching my main memoir document you will have the opportunity then to read much more about my life. My memoirs consist of a plethora of additional documents, images, and the like for which it would be much time-consuming to attach all here. Rather, if interested, I will add anyone who would like to read and see what else my memoir collection consists of by adding your personal email to my DropBox memoir location. Doing so provides a link I then send to your email whereupon you can gain access to much more.
If interested send a reply to dwightdarl@gmail.com and I will set up in DropBox the link. Hopefully, other members will see this post and respond accordingly.
