What are the food prices like in your area?

That had to have been an error. That's just crazy.

Prices can vary from store to store a lot. Raley's and Safeway higher, Winco Foods cheaper. Target also has a good food department in my town.

I have to admit, I don't go total detail on prices. I do watch them. I have noticed some small increases but nothing that crazy. I eat plant based but not the whole foods thing. I consume chips, sugar etc.

Do you have Trader Joe's in your area? I really like their tortillas. No wacky ingredients. Often organic. Decent pricing.
 
Bet there’re lots of people in Gaer’s store who have a cart full and haven’t noticed the prices.

Because of drought there will be a shortage of wheat/flour. Looks like the store is gouging ahead of time.
 

I see a slow increase in just about everything in the grocery stores around here ... and there are several to choose from
I buy what I really want/need, and don't get too bothered by price. I will buy while it's available, because when things disappear they stay gone for a long time it seems.
I just buy fewer items most of the time, to try and balance out the food budget.

Gaer, those prices seem high, but I guess with only one store intown, you don't have much of a choice. That's probably why you groceries are so high. I have five chain stores all abou a half hour away, so my food prices are in line with Nosy Bee 54.

Yes, Prices seem to vary dramatically as to location. (according to the responses)
Chain stores would be more in line, pricewise.
It's all right. I don't eat much anyway!
 
We have a lot of competition in my area which helps but prices vary widely from store to store. It seems that each supermarket chain has different pricing models and different contracts with major food companies.

I’ve noticed a rise in beef, frozen convenience foods and in store prepared items. Bread products are expensive but I’m fortunate to live within walking distance of a dead bread store.

Fresh chicken was high but has come down to prepandemic prices. Generic brands of cereal are also down.

I don’t eat the same way that I did when I was younger so I’ve been able to hold the line and still manage a splurge or two.

I am thankful that I don’t have to shop for a growing family where the younger members are brand conscious when it comes to various drinks and snacks.

Just saw an email from Walmart that said they were out of the size I ordered so they subbed the larger size! So it was not the shopper's fault!!

I eat too much. I've sometimes wondered if I may be broke enough in my retirement to have to eat less. Because I'll always feed the cats first.
 
I shop at Aldi for most of my staple items and have noticed some items have gone up in price - some a few cents and others a dollar or more. Milk, bread, eggs, etc. have not increased too much. I don't care for Aldi's meats so I also shop the specials at a larger grocery store nearby for those items. But when I looked at fresh chicken breasts this week a package of four boneless/skinless breasts were over $10. I decided I would get frozen ones instead for about $5. I typically buy whatever I want but I know I need to be more careful about checking prices so I don't get gouged.

In the spirit of paying attention to the price of things, I ran out of coffee today, went to the market and picked up a 24 K-cup box of Green Mountain Nantucket Blend for $15.99. That's $0.67 a cup, which is my new baseline for comparing coffee prices going forward.

Oh Boy! Do I WISH there were a Trader Joe's near here! They don't ship out much either!
Yes, They have the best tortillas!

Another thing! This local Grocery gets their meat from Mexico! (I'm pretty close to Mexico.)
I asked the meat manager, "Does it pass USDA inspection?"
He said " It would be like "Select' if it did! "
They carry no "USDA Choice" ever! I won't buy meat from there.

Affordability is one thing but availability is critical!
In Nov. 2018 the only 'full service grocery store' in Iqaluit, Nu; Canada had a bit of an issue :oops:

Imagine you're go-to food store suddenly no longer exists and, there's really no other full service source for groceries 😲 It's times like that when one realizes just how fragile our supply chain really is.

I think people are starting to realize that fragility more and more given what this current pandemic has done to disrupt global supply chain activities.

I am interested in which staples, people do use for ongoing foods, in areas like yours.

Do people stock up on things like rice or dried beans/peas, or what else do they rely on, during times of unavailability or sky-high prices, to feed their families? Locally gotten fish or meat? Or large bags or cans, of foods that do not need refrigeration?
