New gadget could help officers avoid use of excessive force, replace tazers

At first I was going to ignore, but I have to agree, it does look like a good idea, in most situations. However, there is no perfect tool to handling every situation as it plays out and escalates. Better than any tool would be if people that are doing something wrong would stop when the police ask them the first time.

This tool looks like it requires quite a bit of skill. But I like it.

At least they have a laser targeting thing to make it easier to place properly.

It is similar to something some Dept already use called hobbling, usually along with handcuffing and not to be confused with hogtying which can be deadly. The advantage to this for officers is if the person is noncompliant they don't have tackle them to ground to slow their movement. One disadvantage is that if the person has a weapon in their hand they can still use it in the seconds it takes the officers to catch up.

The local sheriff’s department is field testing a similar bolo gadget.

It won’t be long before they have a toddler sized version for grandparents. 😊

I think that in the beginning it could be more dangerous for the police officer while they are getting used to it.

If it saves lives it’s a good thing.

Seems like an excellent idea. Time will tell if it works without being wrapped around someone's neck.
They're trained to aim at a person's legs, but can also go for the chest area if an assailant is brandishing a weapon. If you'll notice, the bolo-wrap has a green light on it to spot the target accurately. An officer isn't going to deploy the bolo-wrap if the green light falls on someone's neck.

I was wondering how the cord ends are fastened to the perpetrator. Turns out, they have what look like fishhooks on the ends, which dig into the perp's clothing, and I would guess, on occasion, the perp's skin... or eyeballs.

If the police could be trusted to use it responsibly, it might be useful, but there are just too many bad cops out there who will abuse it and leave somebody tied up, suffering for extended periods of time, with a fishhook digging into their skin. And cops will no doubt find that hilarious. There will be lawsuits aplenty and taxpayers will foot the bill.

So, in conclusion... that's a really, really bad idea. :ROFLMAO:

What can do more damage than a barb on the tip of a string is K9 teeth. Well, and bullets. Bullets can do some damage.

As of late the list of law enforcement agencies that buy into these whizbang non-lethal a/k/a less then lethal gadgetry astounds me. Non-lethal, less than lethal, almost lethal, almost non-lethal or whatever fit's the bill on the use, misuse or abuse on non-lethality depending on a police departments risk management division or how much taxpayer funded settlements are agreed upon. Uh okay. For decades until this non-lethal piece of wood NYPD had become politically incorrect or racist the death rate to perpetrators suspected of the most heinous of crimes was in the single digits, still would be if realism was mistaken for racism. NYPD-MOF's of all races, colors and creeds would order crooks of all races, colors and creeds to stop their crookery then administer a good whack upside their knots to drill the point home.

I knew, with today's technology, there must be a better way! I like this!
I was thinking along the line of something to "freeze" mobility, stop any action, but i guess science isn't there yet.
This is wonderful and causes no harm! Yea! for the inventor! brilliant!

Actually, you're onto something there, Gaer. It's the closest thing to freezing a perp as we can come right now.

Along about the same lines as this bolo wrap, they tried nets shot from a gun, remember? Very visible nets that could be easily dodged. And you could fire a gun through them, and cut through them. And wriggle out of them. These guys don't want to be stopped and will avoid apprehension at any cost. ANY COST, including your life or mine...they do not care.

The bolo wrap isn't going to work in all situations, but I think it's brilliant.

Remember when cops started getting heat for using their batons above the neck. So it became rule of thumb to hit below the neck, then the shoulders, then the waist, then below and excluding the knee. Then they just left them at home.

Things changed dramatically with the Miranda rights.

I remember reading that script in the 1950's NYPD Patrol Guide. TPF and the "no nonesense guys" in the divisions cut to the chase with one good crack to the skull. Nothing more to see here citizens, move along now.
