the X means experimental. also its unmanned which is great. but still requires the steam cat for launch and a hook for landing. the F-35 STOVL is operational. no steam cat or hook needed. which means in the future Navy bird farms will be smaller and with smaller crews. the F-35 is based on the Marine Harrier jump jet

Why is it flying with the gear down? I was never a military pilot, so I am at lost for the reason.
