How do you treat dry eye symptoms?

Both of us have dry eye symptoms but the wife’s is worst. We both use Refresh drops several times a day. At night I put a gel in her eyes just before bedtime. Just wondering if anyone else suffers from this problem and how you treat your eyes.

I use Refresh Optive in the mornings, and Refresh Tears in the evening. I don't officially have dry eye, but I have allergies and my eyes feel very dry and irritated at times.

I was using Refresh Optive Advanced, as recommended here by IKE, and that was extra thick and very soothing, but I didn't like the ingredient that made it so thick, I think it was glycerine. If I used it too close to bed time, I'd wake up in the morning feeling like I had chucks of that stuff under my eye lid. The bottle always had some hardened jelly type substance on the top where you put the cap on, and I felt that that ingredient in that amount can't be good for the eye.

Here we have "Golden Eye Ointment", it has been around
for most of my life and is very good, I have used it for the
odd stye or an injury, you pull down the bottom eyelid
and put the ointment along the inside, instant relief.

Mike.

I've had dry eyes for years. In the morning, when it's the worst, I put Refresh drops in before I blink; otherwise it feels like there is glass in my eyes. On dry, windy days, I need more drops during the day.

It’s one of the side effects of my retinal surgery.

From my optometrist:

Wash eyes with baby shampoo.
Get a specialty heat pack. Warm for 20 seconds in the microwave and put it on your eyes for 10+ minutes. Do this one or two times per day. They’re a variety so it has to be a real pack designed for eyes.
Drops 4x per day or more.
Gel drops at night, if that helps.

Good luck to Mrs Pappy.

I have one of these, and it helps my eyes, more than the lubricant drops, for myself. It was recommended by an eye doc specialist. The brand is Bruder Moist heat eye compress....

It has a soft adjustable comfortable head-strap, and I use it while napping. (It cools down by itself, so does no harm, to wear it longer than 15 minutes, and blocks light which helps the nap)

I also do warm wet eye compress soaks, with washcloth,

plus I have found that there are many types (in each brand) of the lubricant eye drops, and that it is worth trying others, if you haven't found one yet, that helps you or your wife, Pappy.

Soothe brand has one with mineral oil, (called SootheXP) instead of what the others have, which works much better for some people.

Bruder is my preferred mask too. There’s a gel mask in plastic that another optometrist was trying to sell me. I used to use that one and didn’t like it or him.

Forgot to list the warm eye soaks with washcloth.

Another recommendation was to use drops with no preservatives, especially when using them often. Because of the extreme heat this summer, I‘m staying with Allergan Optive Advance.

Important point, for anyone who might try eye lubricating drops and found them irritating,
to try the ones with no preservatives, instead. :geek:

I also re-started using the Bruder eye compresses, that are described in above posts. They help significantly too.
