Why do people have the handlebars set at shoulder level or higher? It looks so uncomfortable to me.

After being stopped beside a fellow whose shoulders seemed locked at that height, I came home and held that position for a couple of minutes. No thanks.

@JonDouglas might be able to give me his opinion since he does lots of riding. Other explanations welcomed.
 

It's an 'image thing'. Think Easy Rider, that classic movie where some guys are out cruising around the southwest US without a care in the world. The 'bad boy' image! They are usually attached to 'chopper motorcycles'. Motorcycle that have been drastically modified from their factory build. In terms of actual riding, they make no sense at all. Dangerous in fact when it comes to the riders ability to control steering under some circumstances. Once you start playing with the factory metrics of any motorcycle, you're usually messing with riding control factors of some kind or other.
There are actually laws on handlebar height. The max. height allowed changes from place to place. Plus it's just another heat source! Cops will pull you over just to measure the height of the bars and then the list goes on and on lol.

Sitting at a long red light yesterday got me wondering about this. The fellow definitely didn’t fall into the ‘bad guy category’ nor did his bike. It just looked so uncomfortable and I couldn’t think of any reason for holding arms straight out.

We were at a weekend festival, changed out of our leathers, but so many wanted a photo that we just posed in what we were wearing. Had she been wearing that dress as we rode along she might have appeared on one of those dubious websites where schoolboys like to look at older women's smalls.
