Any "home handyman" can save themselves a lot of money by doing their own repairs. In many cases, the costs of having some repairman come in and do the job quickly adds up to half, or more of the cost of a new appliance. I imagine I've saved us thousands of dollars, over the years.

yes same here.. so much money saved compared to replacements or reapirmen bills.. and in fact my O/H can do a much better job on most things than most repairmen... it wouldn't be the first time he's re-done a job after someone other so called expert has done it...
 
The last time we had a repairman come by, was perhaps 15 years ago, when one of the controls on our clothes dryer quite working. The Only reason I had him come by was because the dryer was still under warranty. It was a bit amusing to watch him try to figure out the problem....he almost seemed a bit confused on how to use his multimeter to measure the circuits. I'm sure his repair bill would have been well over $100 to replace a $15 part.

Besides, now, there are UTube videos and videos on the appliance parts websites which show how to diagnose/repair virtually any appliance problem, If a person is doing some task for the first time. That, plus repair manuals, and wiring diagrams, etc., online, make most tasks fairly easy.
 
I've had to do that several times over the years. One old pre-YouTube Kenmore came with no belt routing diagram. Took me an hour or so to finally figure out where everything went. :unsure:

Yeah, I've been a "fixer" most of my life....from auto repairs as a teenager, to some of the most sophisticated computer/IT equipment until I retired. I have a massive amount of tools...some of which I've seldom used. Today, due to age, and a bit of arthritis, I have to limit may "activities", but unless it is a major "physical" task, I still dive in.

Yup
Dryers are relatively easy
Washers, not so much

According to the on line manual, I'd have to pretty much totally disassemble the washer

Watched a YouTube guy show a shortcut
Thru the back end

Half hour later, our washer was back on line, doin' it's job

are you my O/H's dad?..:sneaky:.I always wondered where he got his repairman talents from...., he's the same.... cars, engines, plumbing, electrics, you name it he'll fix it ...he won't mess around with Gas pipes.. but that's about the only thing he draws the line at...

He installed all new electrics in this house, new bathroom ..all the plumbing which that entails..built a barn, decorated the house... ... fixes everything as soon as it breaks in the house and pretty much with the cars too..altho' his own high end sports car needs specialist treatment for some things, deals with all the computer issues, used to build computers as a hobby back in the day when we used towers with Microsoft... but now we have MACS...but he still does all the technical stuff when they go wrong.. but he can do just about anything and everything.. and just to add to it.. he's never been employed as a repairman , he works in a completely different field that requires his mind rather than his hands.....

Very inspiring. The next time something around here breaks I'll see if I can fix it. It doesn't build confidence when your wife stands by and keeps asking, "Are you sure you know what you're doing?"
