Those Ceaseless Phone Scams

I signed up for Nomorobo 3 or 4 years ago, and it made little difference. About a year ago, I put an external call blocker on our phone, and it has blocked well over 1000 calls. However, these scammers continue to use new phone numbers. If I look up a number it almost always shows No Name assigned to that number. Anymore, when the phone rings we glance at the caller ID, and if its a number we don't recognize, we just let it ring and go to "leave a message"...which never happens. Once a day, I go through those numbers and add them to the call blocker.
 

Ha, ha, ha, ha! Everyone loves technology and everyone loves their smartphone. This is the price you pay for those smartphones. I'm staying in a hotel right now and there are a llot lot of men sitting outside smoking cigarettes and guess what else they are doing? Right! Starring at their phones like it was some sort of erotic experiences. Perhaps it is? I don't know since I just have a flip phone and I have not even made one call this month. Call me different! I like that!

I would probably be laughing at them, too. I swear it is becoming an anomaly to see someone NOT on a smartphone.

What was the external blocker called? I may look into purchasing one.
 
I used to get so many also. But, several years ago, I also purchased an external blocker. This one will block about 1000 numbers by either name or number. It will also block automatically all "Out of area" phone calls which I was getting so many of them. And, if someone you know does call using the "Out of Area" feature, you can display their number and hit the "invite" button then they can call you without being blocked. I love it! It has saved my sanity!

I don't know if it's against the rules, but are you allowed to say what the name of the blocker is? I am really getting desperate!
 
If it’s our landline, sometimes I pick up the receiver so I can push the off button. I do have a heavy handset that I could do an old-fashioned slam down hangup with. I don’t want to break my phone.

Since my watch displays the phone number on my cell phone and location, I just disconnect them.

I know exactly what you mean when you say you're getting desperate. That's how I felt when I decided to purchase this. I don't think it is against the rules but if it is, someone tell me. It is a Digitone Pro Series II Call Blocker. It has already blocked 3 "Out of Area" calls today. They don't call here like they used to. But, if one should get through, all you have to do is display the number and hit the block button. I LOVE IT!!!! They have a web site and the one it shows is the one I have. I don't know what we do that triggers scammers to call more. But it sounds like you're waving a red flag that you will answer any call. And "press 2" , lets them know you're listening, and compliant. I cut down a lot of those calls by letting my answering machine pick up. If it is a call, I want to take, it's easy to cut in.
BTW, the one scam call that cracks me up is the one that claims my car's warrantee will expired tomorrow.. It's 12 year old Hyundai. ;)

We've never had a cell phone. Yes, I know, we're the last ones left.

I read an article by a retired telemarketer who said if you don't answer or if you answer and hang up it's considered a dropped call and stays on the list. So long as they haven't had a chance to actually talk to you about that free knee brace then they remain hopeful!

So he said their rule before taking your number off the list is they must first hear three "no's."

So usually I just let everything go to voice mail and check the messages a few times a day, but when I'm just loitering on the computer, like right now, I answer and say "No" and then "No" to their reason why my first no wasn't well informed enough and then "No" to the next thing and then, "Thanks, bye." I think I've managed to cut the calls down a little bit.

I think it's great that you haven't ever had a cell phone. I didn't want one, but hubby was upgrading and gave me his old one. I rarely ever use it, except to take pics of my cats, lol.

And it will get even better. Mine hardly ever rings from a telemarketer and when it does, it's because they're using a new number. Then I block it and they will try again and they can't get through! I love it when the light is blinking telling me it has blocked one. I look to see who it was and then I get the last laugh because they tried again and couldn't!

Exactly so. We still have, and use, our finger dial rotary phone. The problem with it though is it lacks the technology to see the incoming call number, so we've had a modern slim phone plugged into a shared socket. Now we can see, and choose to answer, or not, all incoming calls.

For what it's worth, we are hardly ever plagued by phone scammers, perhaps it could be that in the UK you can choose to have your number withheld. Back in the days of the phone book it was known as being ex-directory, meaning your number never appeared in the phone directory.

If you want to vary that and imply that the caller is a sandwich short of a picnic, try: "Which part of no are you having difficulty with?"
