Couple Sues Police After Puppy Shot and Killed

Cops have shot plenty of dogs, even ones on people's property or in their yards. If the dog is running toward the cop, loose, especially if it looks at all like a Pitbull, they will shoot and ask questions later. These people, if they were going to let their dogs run free in a public parking lot, should have been sure the dogs would respond immediately to their recall. Otherwise, the dogs should have been leashed. Hard lesson to learn, but cops were called and dogs came running. I would control my dog just for his own safety. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of the lawsuit.

Exactly. Anyone who owns a dog (especially if it looks like a Pit Bull) should know better than to allow it to run loose - especially if it has a tendency to charge at people.

"The couple parked in the parking lot and were painting an icebox for their firewood delivery business."
Say what now? Why not do their messy painting on their own property? I really didn't like the tone of the whole news piece. At first glance you picture a family stopping for a minute to let a little newborn puppy go potty -- no, they were spending the day there while their Pit Bulls ran loose.

There are just too many stories about this breed suddenly turning violent.https://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-fatalities-2021.php

That dog was a pit bull and was running straight at the cop. <-- I don't side with cops when they're using unwarranted force but in this case the shooting was justified. That attorney is way out of line. The cop didn't have time to get back in his car and hide from the pit bull, which would be a crazy notion anyway. I was attacked by plenty of pit bulls when running, and every one of them threatened to tear me apart if I moved an inch, and every single irresponsible pit bull owner said the same thing, "don't worry, s/he won't hurt you!"

However, the same Loveland, CO police broke a 76 year old woman's arm who had stopped to pick flowers.
Wow. In that case they should definitely be fired and the department held responsible for the damage they caused.

I have to say that I wished the cop could have used less deadly force, taser, rubber bullet, mace or something like that on the dog. They are too quick to shoot animals and people. In this case, the reaction of the cop was expected although I don't encourage killing any animal or person unless absolutely necessary, with this dog, I personally don't think it was necessary.

I was going to a very large, open area off leash dog park for over thirty years with my dogs. I had met many, many Pitbulls who were very well socialized and cared for by their owners. Those dogs were very friendly with me, my dogs and other dogs in the park. They were also gentle with people and children there. They can also be gentle with cats and other small animals if they have exposure at a young age and are trained properly. Most dogs who behave badly, do so because their owners trained them to attack, abused them or did no socialization training whatsoever.

They just mentioned the woman John was talking about on the news while we were eating, I told my husband that was the same location as the cop who shot the young dog. These cops need some training themselves, IMO.

In incidents like these, a cop has very little time for decision making. Speed is what counts & the "Less Lethal" weapons are usually stored in the vehicle for riot or unrest situations; they are too large to wear on a belt. And a Pit Bull can do lots of damage in the time it might take for less-lethal methods to work.
If that dog intended to attack, there would have been no time to access other measures.

Luckily, the pit bulls I have met are very friendly. In fact, they act a lot like my terrier. Once, I went into a 7-11, and a little girl came in with a pittie puppy, who was about 25 lbs. She told me to be careful to stay far away from her because her dog was an attack dog. Meanwhile, the pup was stretching his neck to lick my hand.

I wondered if that was the plan for the puppy, though. First and last time I've ever heard a child refer to their dog as an attack dog. The girl was not scared of me, just matter-of-fact.

This according to the video was 2019. If interested you might want to look up the names to see what the outcome was.
