Old Fashioned Candy

Who use to love this old fashioned candy?? My mother loved these candies and enjoyed having bowls in the living room coffee table and the dining table.

We used to have it at Christmas.

I enjoyed the jam filled raspberries, chocolate filled sticks and anise flavored pillows.

I guess I liked all of them.

I liked the red ones. That candy was really good back when it was made from real sugarcane sugar.

My mom would put the spearmint leaves out once in a while I liked those better.

When we'd go to visit elderly relatives, there was always a bowl of hard candy on the coffee table, of which we were invited to have a piece.

Unfortunately, it had probably been there since Woodrow Wilson was in office, it was usually dusty and it had welded itself into a solid mass. It would take a hammer to get a piece loose.

Oh, the dilemma of how to refuse a piece without hurting Aunt Rose's feelings......

These peanut butter filled hard candy peanuts used to turn up at Christmas.

I disliked these intensely and never bought them as an adult.

My Nan always had some in a crystal bowl.

In recent years there seems to have been a revival of these sweets in the UK. There are quite a few confectioners selling 'retro' sweets loose from big jars, rather than in cellophane bags. As a child we used to get what we called a "poke of sweeties" - a poke being a small paper bag.

Never heard of this, sounds delish....Is that the same as Salt Water Taffy?

Sea foam that my mother used to make was hot brown sugar syrup slowly pour over stiff beaten egg white.
Beat that until it starts to get stiff,, drop by spoon full on to waxed paper, let it set till cool.

Would melt in your mouth,,, I haven't made that in a long time.
