How did Senior Forums start?

I have wondered how Senior Forum started and how people have found this forum to joined it. It has amazed me how people join forums from all over the world. I think it is a type of destiny for people to meet. I have been a member of forums in the past buy they no longer exist. For me I was boared and was looking for a forum to join and typed in senior forums and this forum was there to join. I have also wondered who started this and why they did.

My excuse: Loneliness. Boredom. Loneliness and have I mentioned loneliness? :)
 
I was at AARP website for 5 yrs,was getting fed up with it. Another poster was raving about SF so I came to check it out. I liked what I saw,what really motivated me to join was the fact members were from around the world, no politics allowed interesting topics to post about.I was warmly welcomed when I joined in Aug 2017.Its a great place to hang out,never leaving
 
I am a fairly new member having joined in 2020. I was fed up with social media sites such as fakebook and twitter. Having been on several different forums (and still am), I wanted to find one that was focused on people and their lifestyle rather than their politics. For the most part, I just stay away from the political topics on here.
 
We sold our business and retired in 2017. First time in my life I could actually not have to
micromanage every quarter hour of time. Wanted to keep in touch with others of my
age bracket. Never joined any other senior forum. Its been nice!

Because of the age range here, i don't see why this can't be that place--suspect that was original idea. i see lots of threads that address those concerns. Some almost too 'day to day' (if one is going to post TMI online at least tell it in an interesting way),

My philosophy on social media has always been that if i'm not interested in a topic or the discussion takes a turn that could lead me to be unpleasant to someone--i either 'scroll by' or 'bow out', but rarely with any fanfare i just stop responding to it.

And if you don't see a thread addressing your specific concerns--start the one you want.

Welcome!

i'm too new here to know much about the founder(s) or founding process of this site. i joined in July 2021 at behest of a longtime friend from Eons which is now defunct, but was one of earliest sites aimed at seniors. i'm still in touch with a couple of dozen friends i made on Eons.

For me the international aspect of many social media sites is a big draw. i live rural and am not much for face to face socialising because it drains me more than cyber socializing does. The only thing i miss about living in metro areas &/or University towns--is the international influences in those locales. My Dad was HAM and always advocated for exposure/interactions with people from various backgrounds/cultures. i've been open to learning about folks around the globe my whole life. Internet makes it easy.

Did you ever belong to IVillage? Very early in 2000's, think they only had a minimum age to 'protect' teens. Any adult could join. i've been thru a few sites too...some folded or just didn't hold my interest.
 
Oh I forgot about IVillage, yes I was there for a short while. I discovered message boards around 1999. There was a big board at the time that covered People Magazine, Time, Newsweek etc. It got too big and collapsed. I belonged to the Michael Moore board (far left) Newsmax (far right) and many more. Salon has a great board but it went private and pay-for-it a long time ago. I like Primetimers for TV talk.

I finally realized I was enjoying threads about religion more than anything else so I joined The Ship-of-Fools forum in 2001 (religion, politics, other things) and that's where I spent most of my time until recently. The arguments there are interesting and lively, but the atmosphere was becoming too heated and I realized it had become rather toxic for me.

So I started posting here regularly about six months ago. I had joined years before but hadn't really got started. This is so much better. I love you guys!

No, I never joined IVillage. The first forum I joined was related to Tinnitus, which my former husband had. Some years later, I joined other forums, but they were not a good personal fit for me.
 
I joined here almost 8 years ago.. I'd been and was a current member of 2 or 3 forums and had been a member of others that had closed down, or where there was not a huge membership..or were cliquey...
I'd been a member of Ivillage years before , but not a regular poster, preferring at that time, the very large British forums instead... however, in those forums were a lot of really nasty people, and I got so sick of it, . that I looked around for another forum to join.. I was a member of Ebay Forums as well.. and in fact I was a moderator on a smallish senior forum that started up when SAGA closed down which had been our largest Forum for people over 50....we still have 2 big senior forums of which I'm a member but I don't like the anonymity or in fact the over zealous moderation

I was in full time work then, so I just wanted a little calm and R&R on occasions, and no drama.. so I found this, and everyone seemed so nice, and no infighting ( believe me that came later, we've had our fill of that here too, but it's always dealt with smartish)... and the rest as they say is History... I've gone from working full time in those almost 8 years to retirement and I'm still here.. and I rarely post on any other forum now... ..

That is what I was looking for when I came here. So that is what I focus on in my diary and on the blog I write. Our lives have changed since we became seniors. It is good to know others feel the same way or have the same question I have about something. But things in the news usually take over a good forum. I have been on a few over the years.

Became a disciple
